Question 6600k oc too much voltage?

The most stable overclock I have managed to do is 4.5ghz on a 6600k with 1.36v on the vcore. I can kinda reach 4.6ghz at 1.4v, but I start to get bluescreens sometimes.

I have an ASUS Z170-AR motherboard, running an XMP profile for my 3000mhz RAM.

Looking around I can see that people can do a much better with a lot less voltage. Are there other settings I should look out for in the bios? Try overclocking manually without relying on XMP? Or have I just lost the silicon lottery big time?

Other parts for reference:
Corsair Vengeance 16gb 3000mhz
TX650M power supply
Watercooled CPU with 280mm rad

1.36v is fine, but 1.4v is too much on the original skylake architecture.

Looks like you just lost the silicon lottery a little bit. 4.5ghz is a pretty average overclock.

Alright sweet, glad that it's at least that and I haven't been doing something wrong this whole time

Yeah no you are doing everything right. Haswell and Skylake specifically weren't the best overclockers, especially with core i5s. It seems Intel was putting its higher quality silicon into core i7s at the time as you'd almost always see a core i7 overclocking better than a core i5.

However, seems since Kaby Lake and onwards, both Core i5s and Core i7s now overclock the same LOL.
