6700k 74c under load?

Hey all,

So I recently built a gaming rig.

It consists of a z170 maximus hero viii and a 6700k cooled by the 212 hyper evo cooler.

I found the evo cooler an absolute nightmare to install originally and it ended up sliding all over the place before I got it seated.

I decided to run AIDA64 tonight and was getting max 84c under load (monitored with real temp). I was bored so decided to reseat the cooler and apply fresh thermal paste, so I managed to get it all done and was happier with my install. I ran AIDA64 again and I was getting significantly less temps of 74c max.

I just wanted to ask a few questions

The room temperature has changed a little since all of this has been going on, but could I achieve such a big difference from reseating and applying the thermal paste more evenly and just better overall?

When using real temp the temp fluctuates pretty significantly from around 50 to 74 under load. Is it normal for these fluctuations?

Thanks,
Sammy43.

Sammy43,

AIDA64 is OK for stress testing, but is useless for establishing a valid thermal baseline. For that you need to run Prime95 (version 26.6) Small FFT's which is a steady-state 100% workload that will provide steady-state core temperatures.

Please read this Tom's Sticky at the top of the CPU's Forum: Intel Temperature Guide - http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1800828/intel-temperature-guide.html

The Guide will explain everything you need to know about processor temperatures, and will walk you through how to perform proper thermal tests at 100% workload and at dead idle. All the links you need are in the Guide.
