Main reason for buying card is to play bf3. tri monitor 24" set up.
As I read on I keep learning bout eyefinity issues with three monitors and things not working in the game.
Microsturring etc...

I havent heard much on complaints on the Nvidea side.

hmm?

Solution
If budget is no issue, i'd pick up 2 HD 6990s in CF for the ultimate gaming performance, my second choice would be the HD 6970s in CF or 3-way CF. I always recommend 3-way CF for Eyefinity.

Its not about cheaping out. I have the $ to get what I want. The question is, what works best right now with a 3 monitor set up playing bf3. Thats it..! What I have read is that I dont want a 6990 on its own, maybe crossfired with a 6970 because its microstuddering issues seem to go away with the gpu's. I like the 6970 cf option for about $380 a card on the high end side and Im now seriously looking at the 580 3gb card.

What you gather on the internet is this.

AMD, less expensive for almost the same as Nvidea.
AMD, non reliable drivers.
AMD for me -- seems to have an edge with Eyefinity. I like that because its what Im setting up. 3 monitors.

When I look at all the benchmarks etc, the 580sli is always above the 6970 cf.

Again, it boils down to what plays bf3 better with three monitors.

To make things worse, maybe I should just buy a set of 6950's, save the $ and buy new cards next year that will work for the next 3 to 4 years.

Sorry that was a reply for the post above about the 2x 560ti on one pcb which seems to cost more than 2 of them.
Go for the 6950 and unlock the shaders. It performs better than the 6970 version lol

2x580 does outperform 2x6970 in most games. But for the same price as 2x580, you can get 3x6970 which will dominate 2x580, especially since the 6970s scaling better nearly makes up for the 580s being faster cards. Get the tri-fire, son. Or 6990+6970 if you only have 2 pci x16 slots. The driver issues the fan boys talk about are way overblown (and are probably fixed since the last release anyway). I've been playing bf3 since beta with crossfire and it's worked well. And it's not going to get any worse. If you're looking for price per performance, and you're spending ~$1000 on gpus, get 3x6970.

Well, just started with a set of Saphire 6970 flex bf3 edition cards. I will play this till its time to upgrade and purchase a 6970. By then, who knows what the new cards will offer. This sure has been a fun and exhausting study. Hope my decision will give me a fun time behind my 3 new monitors. Now Im on the hunt for a gaming mouse and good set of ear cans!!!

For a headset, I can't recommend Logitech g930 enough. Wireless, 7.1 surround, good bass, good battery life.
