Would I be better off going with 939 long term? I mean like 3 years? How far will I be able to upgrade with 754? It's definetly the more affordable but is it worth it to me?

1) What do you have now?
2) 939 is supposed to be more "future proof", at least that seems to be the consensus

Personally I think the next year or two will have lots of fast changes. I don't know if u can expect long runs of sockets.

Usually the best advice is to get what you need now. Don't look too far into the future because it changes too fast.

Since you have no computer at present any computer you get will be a major experience. j/k.

I'm going to take a guess that you have some kind of older computer. In that case any solution for you will a major upgrade. The Socket 754's are very nice and more affordable.

Look at your pocket book. If you want to save money and be a relatively unupgradeable take the 754. If your outlook is more seriously in upgrading your CPU in a year then look at the 939.

I don't really see the savings going with 754. $100 between the motherboard and cpu? That's hardly impressive. You really should only be going with 754 if you're penny pinching and don't care about an upgrade path.

The more I look at it the more the gap is closing though. Depending on what features you want on the motherboard (whether you want to buy a $69 754 MB or get something with more features), the price difference might be as little as $10.

The common buyer gets a new system, not parts. They do not overclock.
A s754 3200 will outperform a s939 3200.
Perhaps for you, spending more, for options like chip upgradeability, and enhanced OCing is worthwhile. For the person who only builds every 2 to 3 years, buying a s939 setup, even at the same price would be spending $ for less.
I just put together another A64 system. I again went s754. I will probably replace that system next year. Just the same, there was no quality option in 939 that would have fit the user's (my daughter) need as well, in the same price range. Next year, she will switch to a PCI-exp graphics solution. At that point, s939 may be a better option. Of course, around the same time Amd says they will change to DDR2. She may go that route, if it fits the cost/use scenario.
