I'm building a gaming computer over the summer and I need help selecting a graphics card. I can't decide between the GTX 770 and 780. I'm considering a 770 Lightning Edition from MSI, and would probably have to go with a reference 780 because I can't find the EVGA ACX one anywhere in stock. If there are any 780s with non reference coolers that are good and are in stock I would get one. I will play games like Battlefield 4, GTA 5, ESO, Arma 3, Day-Z, Minecraft, CoD games, Wolfenstein, Metro games, etc. I will be playing a lot of games that vary in graphics requirements and may look to upgrade to a second monitor in the future.
So, 770 Lightning or whatever 780 I can find? I'd say the 770 would be more bang for my buck but I'm looking for a few opinions on which one I need.

Thanks in advance

Solution
It depends on what kind of games you will be playing and how long until you intend to upgrade. The 780 is a better long term solution, its overkill for 1080p now but its 3GB of VRAM will be useful in the coming years as games are starting to breach 2GB at 1080p. The 770 only has 2GB of VRAM, which will be enough for a year or two but eventually will limit performance just like 1GB does now.

The 2nd monitor isnt really a factor at all, you cant play across dual monitors so it will just sit at the desktop and consume near zero resources. If you were going for a triple monitor setup (which you game across) then you definitely want that extra VRAM.
It will be a 1080p 60hz monitor, but I will most likely be upgrading to a 2nd monitor in the future. Would the 770 still run at good FPS or would it be close enough to the 780 to not justify the $200 price increase?

Thanks, I think I will go with the MSI 770 Lightning, seems to be more bang for my buck. I heard that EVGA will be releasing their Classified 770 with 4GB of VRAM soon too, so I may go with that. Does MSI normally have a 4GB Lightning model or do they keep it at 2GB?

Great choice, Asus makes great cards! I always go with EVGA because they are Nvidia's #1 partner and have never let me down. Good luck!

Step up program??? Please explain! 😉

EVGA has a step up program where you register your card and you can upgrade to a better one within 90 days and pay the price difference between the two cards. http://www.evga.com/support/stepup/
It's pretty neat!
