Question 7900 XTX ?

My local Microcenter has a PowerColor Hellhound 7900 XTX for 799.

Current pc

7600x3d
32gb ddr5 Corsair vengeance rgb 6000
Asus tuf gaming b650 plus WiFi
Rx 6800xt
3 ssd drives-500gb boot, 2tb nvme and 2tb sata
Corsair rm850x purchased approximately 2021.

Monitor is 1440p 180hz 27 inch.

I realize a 7900 XTX is overkill for 1440p, but that is a good price and a quick search on eBay says I should get 300-350 for my current card. Seems like a decent deal. 799 is about the best price I’ve seen on that class of card.

Part of me says wait until next generation but again that’s a decent price. They’ve also got the same model in a 7900xt version for 619.99.

It is a good price, I doubt AMDs next generation will be faster in raster only in ray tracing. Nvidia next gen will likely be expensive.

It's a good price, but I think the most important thing would be the combination of why you'd be upgrading and how long you wanted to keep it.

While I doubt the next generation of Radeon will be a lot faster than the 7900 XTX it will have significantly improved RT. There's also no guarantee that the improved AI version of FSR they're working on will be backwards compatible.

Personally speaking I'm running 1440p UW on my system and have zero intention of replacing my card until whatever the next generation is at the earliest (meaning Xe3/RTX 6xxx/RX 9xxx).

Part of it is I was talking to a friend who has one and he was pointing out that price as being great. Don’t get me wrong it’s not that the 6800xt isn’t doing something I want but at the same time it may not be a bad idea to sell it while it’s got most of it’s value.

I do realize that maybe that card may not support all of the latest upcoming features, but I would imagine that card would have enough brute force for a while. I think the performance is basically what, a 4080.

It appears from a fast search that rtx performance on the 7900xtx is roughly a 3080ti-3090ti level. I would hope the card could last until the rx 9000 series. Part of it is as well you see that price and see the idea of tariffs so not knowing what things will cost, of course e know nvidia will be expensive. But part of it is wondering as will you see newer games such as Indiana Jones requiring RT, and wondering if the 7900xtx will be enough particularly for the games at the end of the nvidia 5000 series generation.

Let me ask, is the Corsair rm850x sufficient for a 7900xtx? Purchased in about 2021.

Stuff I’ve seen suggests yes. However I’m planning to set up a secondary system for my wife’s home office so I may transfer the Corsair into her pc. Any relatively inexpensive units that would be recommended for the 7900xtx? Inexpensive as in decently priced but reliable. I don’t intend to buy a budget unit or something like some of the of the wall units you see. I was looking at some super flower units but no experience with them.

Never used any bequiet products but this looked decent for the money. Figuring maybe buy up a little to have a bit of headroom then later if I pick up a better CPU etc then I am set.

Maybe one of these?

An 850w psu is enough, I'm running a 7900x3d and RX 7900xtx on my EVGA 850w unit.

If you want to buy it then buy it. Relax it, don't be regretful later.
Im up to 5 powercolor cards now 5700xt red devil 6900xt red devil 7900xtx red devil 6700xt spectral white hellhound and a 6650xt hellhound sakura and all of them have been great no trouble what so ever!!

The hellhounds are quite cool little beasts over the red devils but then they dont draw as much power has the red devils !!

So 100% a new powercolor card is a decent buy and i doubt there will be any regret

As far as psu I ended up purchasing this. Showed up on the tier list as A rated and was 145 for a 1200 watt unit, which is overkill but on the other hand when a lot of the other units were 1000 watts for about the same money might as well get the extra power then it’s a bit oversized if I toss in a Ryzen 7 10800 x3d whenever they release that or a similar cpu.

I’m going to attempt to get the hellhound card but I won’t be able to get to Microcenter until Thursday and they are supposed to put it back at the end of the day today. I also saw a refurbished reference model 7900xtx for the same price there so I may try to get that if the hellhound isn’t available. Worst case they had a hellhound 7900xt for $619, so I can always fallback to that.

But at least ordering the psu gets me solid power for whatever card I end up with and lets me shift the 850 to my wife’s future office pc. I’ve got a z690 board leftover with 32gb of ram. Selling the 12600kf I have but likely going to pop an i5 12400 into that board since it is a lower power draw, is cheap and has the igpu. Just need to grab that and a cheap black case which is what she wants.

You're not kidding about the hellhounds, I've got an Rx 6700 xt hellhound in a build that I'm currently selling that I can't get to go past 52c. That was the temperature after running furmark full tilt for 24 hours. It was the same when I left it running unigine super position for another 24 hours after that. I thought it may not have been fully utilized, but nope, it was hitting 98 - 100% the whole time and giving great performance. That card may have some serious oc potential.

Problem with power colour cards ( guess not really power colours fault )
Is they are over engineered for the limits AMD put on them ..

The red Devis are rated much higher wattage than what AMDs Adrenalin software will allow to push through it..

I remember quite a few arguments on the power color forums over the 6900xt claimed wattage to what you could actually push into it..

Unless you wanted to risk warranty and card the only way was to use a custom bios!

Honestly I don’t get the point of high end AMD cards at this point. Lower end cards can run raster well enough to the point where it won’t make a difference and if you want to turn settings up AMD still can’t do RT so you can’t run games maxed out with your expensive card

The problem is that Nvidia are still taking mind share and market share 5080 and 5090 ( not sure about 16gb on the 5080 )
Both are going to keep Nvidia on the top tier list ..

AMD are going to flounder away in the mid to low tier with intel competing for the same market at a lower price….

AMD needs that 5090 beating flagship to say hey Nvidia you are not the best of the best and offering competition because of right now there is none

You want the best Nvidia is it at a premium price and they will continue to charge what ever they like because AMD can’t / don’t want to compete .

Aib 5090s will be around the 2000 to 2100usd price

Then

6090 at 2500usd ?? Why not there is nothing stopping them from charging that!

Unless of course AMD know they can’t win against Nvidia ever so why not completely cook Intel’s CPU’s and GPU’s

which makes more sense they have sent intel into the Stone Age with there CPU’s why not crush there GPU’s too so AMD can occupy the crappy low end market in GPU’s and own the market in CPU’s

Or on the other hand what if Intel and AMD gpu divisions merged somehow. Being realistic, AMD has great performing cards but ray tracing is where they are hurting.

I know I’ve been looking at the 7900 xtx which is likely the card I’m going to get but I’ve also looked briefly at the 4070 ti super. Just not certain I want to n buy an nvidia gpu.

I’ve got a 6800 xt now. Would it be worth picking up a 7900 xt vs the xtx if they are out of the xtx?

Thing is intel has come in and is already beating AMD in ray tracing. All AMD has to to is get 75% of the performance of nvidia in RT and actually run the cards at a competitive price and it would be an easier recommendation. But as it is why would you buy a 7900 over a 7700 when you’re only after raster? The 4090 at least can do RT significantly better than a 4070Ti even if the 4070Ti can hit 120+ FPS on 99% of titles. The 7900 and 7700 are both for the most part unplayable in RT.

Hey let me share some thoughts with you today my rx 7900 xtx xfx magnetic air is already broken in 3 months after purchasing .the temp is go up to 99 degree during gaming and suddenly the system shut down .if you want rx 7900 xtx better think again because mine is already broken and i will sent it to warranty next week.temp gpu 99 degree in all gaming application hotspot near 115 degree

Hm. I apologize you had trouble. One friend of mine has one and loves his card. Microcenter does have an extra 2 years warranty where I can just take the card to them and get store credit or something in case of trouble so I may just do that so I wouldn’t have to worry about it and could just take it in to exchange if needed.

Btw…

Merry Christmas!!!

He is lucky enough and i just realized that my gpu fan stop working thats why

RT is still a hit and miss system .. 100% yes Nvidia are better at it but on the other hand Nvidia cards under the 4090 maybe 4080 still need upscaling to achieve decent frame rates at high resolution!!

Then take AMD well thats a no brainer its terrible on AMD cards !! better than 6000series but still WAY behind !!

But i dont think Intel is beating AMD in RT the new 9070 , 90 whatever lol cards ( that name is still stupid to me ) will be much better than Intel but Intel will win on price !!

People are still buying AMD and why because RT is either not a big concern to them or they are just not buying into Nvidia's crap !!

That is why RT is wanted but very hit and miss with consumers !!

I was expecting much better RT with my 7900xtx but NO .... then on the other hand there has not been a 7950xtx or a updated model of my 7900xtx since its release 2years ago so ive got basically the best of the best AMD has offered ( yes it falls short big time in RT and is really just a 4080 maybe 4080 super in raster but i also paid less than the 4080 and 4080 super )

( i truly love the mentality of Nvidia fans who buy most of Nvidia's crap at launch only to have it superseeded later on 4080 super 4070 super the 5 versions of the 4060 ) Nvidia loves their dumb customers !!

( I swear jensen gets a boner every time you guys upgrade to the better version of the same model !! )

Maybe one of them fancy magnetic fans died ..

Not good but also a bit of a new concept

My 7900xtx red devil has been plugging along fine even after it caught fire

( kinda my fault i was using the ez fab right angled connector for some reason can’t remember why I pulled the plugs out but must of forgotten to push one back in correctly)

Luckily I was looking at it as it started to go up so not much damage need to make sure the plug is pushed all the way in ..

Destroyed the plug and slightly melted the connector but all pins are intact and the connector will push all the way in still ..
So it’s fine and I’ve been using it quite often. For some solid gaming sessions and it still works like champ!!

Yes all of my fans died thats why it become very hot.xfx have bad quality part the sensor of the fan is dead.i prefer asus or gigabyte maybe it better because for 7900 xtx xfx is the cheapest
