7900gt or x1800xl

Hi,
My friend he plays only FEAR and Oblivion and in the market to purchase a gpu, which is the best choice for him as he loves to play these on high should he get 7900gt or radeon x1800xl. By the way his pc is AMD 3800X2 2gig ram 160g h/d.
As I heard that x1800xl and performance is not part apart from 7900gt.

Out of the 2 choices you have given - it's a clear no-brainer:

GeForce 7900GT all the way!!! It's clearly the superior card (as I best understand it) and the X1800XL has no chance against it

- unless it's cheaper or something. But F.E.A.R. needs all the GPU power you can throw at it. So yeah, there. BUT Oblivion seems to work better on ATi cards, BUT BUT 7900GT better than X1800XL very much

HOWEVER

If there had been an X1900XL - there might have been some competition here, because we've seen I think that x1900 cards do better in shader heavy games (Oblivion again, as well as F.E.A.R. I think) - due to the 48 pixel shaders.

There IS an X1900XL, but you have to take the compulsory TV tuner - it's the All-in-Wonder X1900 (no XL tag here). If the price is right - I believe this card will be better for Oblivion (at higher resolutions and settings) but probably not quite so good for F.E.A.R. - especially if your friend wants to get an SLI setup in the future.

I read an Oblivion benchmark article recently - unfortunately I can't remember where it was. Try searching for it. I think X1900 AiW might actually be better than 7900GT SLI in that game (but not in F.E.A.R. I don't think)

Does that make sense?

7900 GT is better than the X1800 XL, but the X1800 XT can be found for the same price as the 7900 GT and is a better card for Oblivion.
