7970M lag after a bit of gaming

I have a Clevo P15xEMx with a 7970M GPU and i7-3610QM CPU, whenever I run a graphic-intensive game, like GTA V, the game lags after a while, this applies for other games and apparently it's because the GPU's overheating, but after tabbing out and letting it cool, it still lags, what can I do about this? If I have to physically add cooling, what's the best way to do that?

Solution

Chances are all that's wrong is the cooling assembly is choked up with dust. It happened to me with a laptop a while back- cleaning the dust out of the fan and cooling fins with an old toothbrush made it run like a new machine again :)

To check this, remove the cover plate from the bottom of the laptop, and remove the cooling fan (do NOT remove the heatpipe / heatsink assembly though unless you have some spare thermal compound). Looking at some photos the cooling kit looks almost identical to that in my old Asus laptop that had this issue- with mine a 'blanket' of dust built up between the fan and the heatsink stopping airflow.

I don't think so, I've just cleaned it and don't even see any dust.

Hmm that's annoying. I'm not sure what else to suggest other than maybe look at putting in some custom profiles in Radeon software (assuming you're laptop will allow you to install the new Crimzon drivers? I know laptop drivers can be tricky...).

In there is an option called 'framerate target control'. Turn that on and set the max fps to something like 60. It will help keep the gpu clocks down and should reduce heat and therefore keep it running smoothly. I've done this on my desktop R9 280 and it works really well. No point hammering the gpu creating frames you can't see.

I've actually recently got rid of the laptop, but I do have a 280 as well, maybe this will come in handy, thanks!
