The 5870 was 40 percent faster taking away the dx and bandwith advantage its got. When compared with pixel vs pixel it was a 23 percent improvement.

Where does the x2 performance come in people fell for so easily? DX 11. DX 11 needs higher bandwith and thats what the cards got basically over the old ones. That and two extra shader units as the old cards did tessellation with the vertex shaders. The ROPs what increased to 32 as well but if it wasnt for GDDR5 the 256k bus of amd wouldve choked. Nvidia on the other hand with their bigger bus dont know how to connect it properly to the device.

So that x2 performance was promised and sometimes reached in Dx 11 wit AA and such disabled. So the newer cards werent that magically faster the older cards were just crippled with the benches they tested it on

@ Gnomio, where do you get this idea that DX11 is bandwidth dependant ?

@ 9_breaker,
Basically the cards were designed to be made on a 32nm process but the 32nm process was such a problematical one that it got binned. This resulted in the cards being made on a 40nm process which meant compromises had to be made on a features vs die space level.
The result was cards that didn't perform to the expected level. That's why the 68xx cards are slower than the 58xx cards.
AMD did their best to spin it into a reasonable line up and because the Nvidia GTX460 was biting on the heels of the 5850 it looked to those who didn't know better like it was done on purpose, because AMD didn't have a card in the segment between the 5770 and 5850 where the GTX 460 was making hay.

Mactronix :)

Just to add to mactronix's post, the HD6800 Series weren't meant to replace the HD5800 Series cards as the naming would suggest, So the true comparison would be between the HD5700 Series and the HD6800 Series.

Just AMD taking over and making a hash of the naming scheme.
