Hello
My friends upgrading his 1050 to a 970 but the version of the 970 he has takes an 8 Pin PCIE cable but the PC only has 2x 6 pin pcie adapters.
Can he use one of those 6 to 8 pin pcie adapters? I understand 6 pin only gives 75 watts but will the 970 use the other 75 watts supplied by the mobo?

His PC Has a 500W PSU from Lite on and it's got an 80 plus rating.

So can he use one of the adapters?

Adapters are very rarely recommended. This is not one of the exceptions. The 970 is more power-hungry and this power supply is extremely low quality.

80-plus rating is just efficiency and pretty meaningless in this context. A Yugo from the 80s was quite efficient for the time and it was a terrible car.

"OK, I"ll put some duct tape on the brakes. I'll have the brakes actually fixed at some point in the future."

This was a very, very poor decision. Do you intend to pay your friend for the damage if this PSU fries his components or the adapter catches fire -- a not uncommon result -- in the meantime?
