800mhz memory running at 480 after overclocking to 800!

Hi, i read about the memory set at stock to half advertized mhz so tried upping 800mhz memory to 800mhz on my old pc and the max it goes to is 480! I've used the Asus AI suite to overclock the cpu and it worked, tried the memory and it started on 800mhz and went upto 1600 my pc stated 400 in cpuz. The asus app goes up in small amounts on a dropdown i think it states double of what is on on the pc say the app says 800 then the pc is on 400, the next one up was 960 and when i did it my memory went to 480 but it won't go any higher! I've got 1600mhz on my new pc the asus app says 1600-3200, cpuz says they are 800 at the moment. I wanted to test on my old computer first and the results aren't working out. Anyone tell me why the ram won't go any higher than 480?
The ram is 4gb geil and 4 gb kingston hyperx all 800mhz and never had a problem in nearly 4 years of use. Just thought i'd try to get it up to what it should be before i sold the computer.
The E8500 cpu is up to 4ghz without any problems at 50C full load using the same app.

Ah right i read on here and other places that manufacturers purposely under clock the ram and that it's upto us if we want to clock up to the advertised speed. I'll have to find a more knowledgeable source. Dodgy advice telling people they can double up it can damage components when wrong!

It has actually been running for the past 2 weeks at these settings and it clearly runs better, temps are the same and freezes have disappeared, hdds are overloaded with crap but this ram boost seems to have helped. I've been using the old pc for downloading and encoding movies and it has been at full load quite a lot!

Just realized ddr = double data rate, double being the operative word.

There are dangerous not very knowledgeable people giving out advice not the experts though it's just random people!
