In the two years or so since 802.ax was introduced, or WiFi6 if you prefer, there's been little to show that any manafacturer is interested in supplying an USB adapter that can use the new standard.

Now, there's always a chance that something has been released that is difficult to find with an online search. But, for the time being, it seems that for technical or commercial reasons, an USB WiFi adapter seems unlikely, or is that an an incorrect assumption?

I doubt that it's technical, since there are many PCIe and a couple 2230, all pretty reasonably priced, although they are only pre-certification.

Maybe not enough demand yet as the 802 working group just finalized the certification this month, quite a while behind schedule and no actual certified devices will be out until early 2021.

Finally DLink has announced the release of an adapter of the type I was interested in

And it is obsolete the day it comes out :)

Get to start the waiting all over with wifi6e. This should be a massive improvement not because it technically different it is all the new bandwidth in the 6g range so everyone doesn't stomp on each other. There is currently 1 card you can get from intel and maybe you can buy the asus router that supports it but I suspect we have at least 6 months before the general consumer even knows what wifi6e is.
