Ok so I want to upgrade my pc to an 8th gen cpu. NOT considering price's and limited editions, which cpu is "better"?(I know they're pretty much the same, but still). The 8086k has a 300 mhz higher clock but no L2 cache while the 8700k doesn't have that 300mhz but has 6x256KB L2 cache, according to Newegg info(Intel site says they both have 12mb of Smartcache). I mainly just play games(Destiny 2, Battlefield) and watch youtube/twitch. The motherboard I plan on buying is the Gigabyte Aorus Gaming 7. The cpu cooler I have is the Corsair h115i. Which ever one I buy, after making sure it works and overclocks well, I'll probably delid it.

Thoughts on this? And please dont say "just choose the one you want". I want to read reason why you would choose "this one" or "that one"

Would get the 8700K, save the limited edition thingy. Delid the 8700K and it'll probably reach 4.9-5.0 easily, 5.2 tops with voltages under 1.4V. The 8086K is juat a glorified/rebadged version of the 8700k anyways.

I see it as four options:

1. Price/Performance - I would get the 8600k. I know that's not one that you mentioned but my friend had the 8700k and a corsair 280mmm AIO on it and the temps were really high, but the performance was amazing. He sent it back (not wanting to delid and void warranty) and got a 8600k and his temps are way better and gets nearly the same performance. Unless you need hyperthreading for a specific reason, games prefer real cores and high clocks. The i5 is cheaper and a really great option for saving some money.

2. The middle ground. Get the 8700k and make sure you have a good fan profile and plenty of ventilation on your case. Great performance and high temps (when overclocked).

3. Balls to the wall. Get the 8700k, and delid it (but don' put the IHS back on). Get the Derbauer mounting kit for Coffee Lake that lets you safely mount the AIO to bare silicon with liquid metal. Pray to the silicon gods that you got a good OC'er, cause with those 2 mods you could be running full blast at 5.2 with 1.4v at 50-60c.

4. Insanity. Get a binned 8086k. There is a company out there selling binned 5.3 chips. Costs a ton and probably isn't worth the extra cost, but it's as good as it gets on Z370 for games. Do the mods. Create fire!

What do you mean it doesn't have L2 cache?

What the I7 8086K is really is a high binned I7 8700K that will do higher core speed at less voltage.

No, I haven't played with it yet to see how high I can get it to go. Eventually I might, but 5.0 GHz MCE is fine for now..... My i7 8700K wouldn't go past 4.7 GHz MCE at reasonable voltage.

I guess the site I was looking at didn't publish all the info on it lol
