8350 OC opinions needed! Wierd OC

I have a pretty cool 8350, running stable 4.6 ghz at 1.275V but if I try to get it to 4.8 it just freezes... I have tried all the way up to 1.465v but it still keeps freezing. I am running a 990fx sabertooth, CM 850V PSU and a NH D15. I should be able to run at least 4.8 I figure, I was aiming at a toasty 5.0 but keepin it realistic atm. Advice?

I found when OC'ing my 8350 that the percentage gain above 1.4v / reasonable temps for a 24/7 OC were negligable. 4.4 -4.6 was pretty doable at 1.35/1.375 v, which yielded low to mid 50C operating temps while gaming, on a not spectacular cooler. Which imo are happy temps for a FX series cpu. And that is with a R290x contributing it's many watts to case heat lol.
Unless you just want that screenshot of CPU-Z or w/e to make ya happy, and then drop it back to 4.8/1.4 for real world use, since your gaming/computing experience will have no noticeable difference.
But the heat and shortened life at 5Ghz are definitely a thing.

I'd ask in the AMD OC forum here on tom's specifically, there may be some little tweaks that would do what you want.
I would think 4.8 would be pretty achievable, but since you didn't mention temps getting out of control at 4.8 attempts, my vote is for bad luck in the lottery. It happens.
That 4.6 at 1.275 is pretty good, so maybe another setting in there someplace will let you hit higher numbers.
IIRC when OC'ing my (recently replaced) 8350, the ram speed would increase to beyond 1866, making it have a fit and not boot.
Can't remember whether that was with some quick auto OC experiments, it's been a couple years.
But something to check maybe?
 


So usually I oc in bios, I gave amd overdrive and that seems to be the problem :/ running 4.8 at 1.39v atm and it seems stable so far. its the longest prime run I have had yet. I was hoping overdrive was hated by elitists, but it really seems to be good for small ocs only 🙁 Hold your hats, 5ghz here we come

Going for a ryzen 5 1600 upgrade soon, so I just wanted a screenshot I guess. My temps are acting up, it seems summer has something to do with it, I generally keep my pc clean. Usually even during summer my nh d15 keeps my cpu at sub 45c at 1.3 load. Now at 1.4 load it goes to 65c on small fft.. Bad chip for larger OC maybe?
 
Not really. Prime95 will hit far higher temps than any normal use ever will.
Gaming for instance I doubt you are above mid 50's. if that, at 1.4.
Ambient definitely affects things though.
As well, I found I could hit 2400 Northbridge on mine.
4.6 /2400 NB benches and runs a fair bit faster than 4.8/2000 NB.
Which is 15% clockrate bump over stock turbo, along with a 20% NB bump over stock.
If I remember right, this gave me 35% plus higher cpu benchmarks (depending on which test)
over stock. 30% average gain seems to stick in my mind. It's been a while.
35% gain is no joke lol. :)
*Note. NB bumps will affect ram speeds, pretty sure I am remembering this right.
So you have to manually set ram speed when doing this.
Also, NB bumps don't need more volts. Making them more or less "free" as far as thermals go.
