Anyone have a working game in their collection or know of one around? I
have a chance to buy one that's been hacked on big time and might need
to ask some questions before I jump in to try and save this one.
Thanks.

I don't (although I wouldn't mind one - I like the artwork on it).
IPDB says it's a System 7 game. I thought I read somewhere that there
were some of these transcended into System 9 boards too (I could be
wrong, though). I doubt you'll find much out there on the game
specifically since there were only 100 made. I'd say take a chance if
you like the game since you'll probably never find one again. I'm sure
some other Sys7 and 9 people can help where possible.

Good luck if you decide to go after it.

Mike,

You are correct. While researching an article, I did discover that most
"Star Light" machines were WMS System 7. And, the last 10 to 20 were
WMS System 9.

It's been quite a while, but I know the game I looked at had a large
badly burned spot in a board that probably ruined it, and not sure
which system it's running which doesn't concern me THAT much, but the
guy's teen-age kids being into it trying to "fix" it here and there is
what has me worried. Essentially they've managed to turn it into a nice
looking parts game right now unless I can find another example for pics
or information to reconstruct the wiring hacks. If your Swiss friends
would be kind enough to lend assistance on what wires go to where, I
may go pick it up anyway and try to save it.
Thanks, Brian

Not sure how much work you want to put into this game, but if you look
at the PDF manual from IPDB it shows the solenoid numbers and switch
matrix (including wire pinouts and colors) which means you should be
able to rewire anything that the kids messed up. If it's just the
boards that are toast it'd be easier to replace a whole set of Sys7's
than to find another Star Light. I guess the question is, how much do
you want the game and how much work are you willing to put into it (and
how much are they charging you for the game - is it still worth it)?

Good luck and let us know what happens.

I have two friends in Switzerland who have one. One is a loaner and for sale but
the other will stay in his collection. Both System 7 style. As far as I know
working Rom Images and operators handbook are on the ipdb. Shouldn't be too hard
to restore with this information even if it's a rumored Sydtem 9. Nice backglass
but not much else. Just send me an email if you buy it and let me know what
information you need.

Yeah, it DOES look real boring to play and it's not worth a lot, but
you guys know how I am...I'm into the rare and unusual stuff no matter
how much of a dog it is.
That was quite helpful finding out that the wiring colors and
locations they go to are on that pdf file, that alone might push me to
go ahead and try to get it. I think one of the current owner's teen-age
kids fancies himself as a Jr. Scientist or something and he's got the
wiring to stuff all undone and botched up and that had me real nervous
on this one. Thanks for all the help, we'll see what we can do on it.

Looks are very deceptive!

I have one and it's a great game: the flippers could never be described
as weak making it faster than maybe any WPC game although not a Capcom
on full flipper power (superb feature). The sounds are superb and
backglass art is fitting although it's a shame that it has generic
cabinet artwork (compare with Laser Cue). I love the playfield for it's
3-D video game look and the shot layout is varied ranging from
dead-cert to quite tricky. A 2nd button above the right flipper is the
lane change for the roll-over lanes and buttons. There is also the
possiblity of ball of bonus time - but only if you've played well
enough!

And then there is the rarity factor!

It's my game on the IPD.

If I can help in anyway change google to jsb to email me directly

Cheers, John

A second button for lane change?!? What, did they run out of stacked
EOS/LC switches on your particular unit? I mean, I thought every game
from BK through Space Shuttle(all of sys 7-9) or farther that had lane
change had it built into the right flipper. Is there a second hole
cutout on the left with no button, like maybe they overran cabs that
had magna save switches and figured they'd unload them as Star lights
by unstacking the EOS/LC switches and using the preexisting hole for a
bizarre experiment in multi-finger lane changing? Maybe it was the
Robotron effect- where you need 12-15 fingers to be any good, and they
thought more people would play pins if they had to utilize more
fingers? Does the apron have the arrow pointing to Lane Change farther
up than normal? Sorry, I'm just curious. I find it strange and feel
desirous for explanations.

See
<http://www.ipdb.org/showpic.pl?id=2362&depth=-1&picno=27360&zoom=1>
bottom right of the photo. (Apologies for weird ropelight reflection!)

No 2nd button or hole on the left.

I don't know if they are standard - I've been told not - but all three
buttons are of the translucent red variety. Can anyone else shed any
light?

I'm after a flyer if anyone has one for sale...

Cheers, John

It would certainly make the game more challenging and hypothetically
give you better control of the game. Or maybe Barry was just trying
something different when he designed it. Does anyone know why this
game has such a low production run?

The pf layout look very similar to Black Pyramid minus the swinger
target. Looks like a pretty boring game as BP is a total snoozer.
Weren't these the dark days for WIlliams at this time?

Brian,

shouldn't be a problem but it may take a little time to get some shots if the
first one is sold. I wouldn't worry too much about the wiring. It's either
standard System 7 or 9. If you have seen one you have seen all. All you need is
the information in the operations handbook. All wires are color coded so it's
usually no problem.

If it has a System 9 CPU inside check that the eproms are good. Not sure if they
used different ones for these protos. Wouldn't be a complete showstopper but if
Ray or some other dealer doesn't have the images it might take some time to get
them. If worst comes to worst you need to put a System 7 backplane in it.

The flyer just says "For the 1st time, our exclusive lane change(TM)
feature is activated by a separate button on the player's right side for
more control".

As it happens, I do have an extra. I'd rather trade but you might be
able to talk me into a sale. ;)

You can see my flyer/book tradables and some other stuff in my
collection at;

Thanks!
