Hi there,

I just got my Dell 8400, 3.4ghz p4, 1gb ddr ram, 2x160 gb drives raid 0,
x800se video card, etc on tuesday. It runs great, except for my cable
internet doesnt stay hooked up. When i first got it, it ran fine, for
awhile, but after about 30 min on the net, it drops me, and seems to mess
with my IP address. Thru several calls to comcast/dell, here are some of
the steps taken:

go into the cmd prompt, do an ipconfig...then an ipconfig release..then ip
confing renew..also would go to control panel, network, lan, driver,
repair..and that would do about the same thing.

the interent would work for about 5-10 min and then bam..dropped again.

The cable works fine on my laptop, and i have never had any issues with
it.

Dell and I ran thru several checks, did a system restore, turned of Norton
internet security..etc..etc..but for some reason i keep getting dropped.

I have also just installed world of warcraft, and set the firewall
accordingly, to open up certain ports, but that again ran just fine on the
laptop. Dell is now sending out a new mother board, does this sound like
the problem because it has the integrated network card or could this be
something with the norton internet security?

Thanks

You might check the network card properties in device manager. On the Power
Management tab make sure it's not set to "Allow the computer to turn off
this device to save power."

The disconnection is similar to having 802.11 authentication checked in
the wireless properties but not using WPA. Also, broadcast SSID. Some
cards will simply not work reliably if SSID is not broadcast. When the
IP changes, it might be connecting to another wireless network? Remove
all other networks from preferred networks and do not have the option to
connected to non-preferred networks enabled (advanced properties).

Thanks for all your help guys...it problem was:

The network card properties in device manager. On the
Power Management tab make sure it's not set to "Allow the computer to turn
off this device to save power."

As soon as i unchecked that, the internet work just fine, no more
disconnections, HillyBilly Thanks! (as well as everyone else who posted)

Now its time to cancel that motherboard order from dell..its kinda a shame
that after maybe 4-6 hours with 5 different tech support reps, that the
problem was just 1 simple little box and that the motherboard would have
not fixed it and i would be going thru the same issues all over again.

While they are friendly, the service kinda stinks...just my 2 cents.

Have a technician from Comcast come out and check your cable signal strength at
the computer. I had this same problem about 6 months ago. Although it had been
working fine for almost 2 years, even with a splitter inline supplying a signal
to a TV, somehow the signal strength had degraded. My cable company found I had
low signal strength and ran a dedicated cable from the outdoor junction box to
my computer. No charge.

Telephone tech support, whether Dell's or any other, lacks real world
experience. Most of the people who post here have a lot of real world
experience. Enough that maybe we should get MTV to produce and televise a "Geek
Real World"? ... Ben Myers
