8k Television or the W/E is next - what will catch on?

I'm big into the physical media scene of collecting films - TV - some games. And on my forums that I'm on people say 8k is far from catching on. Others disagree and say it will happen sooner rather then later, maybe when the next Xbox - Playstation come around. That said back when 1080p was standard 4K just came out of know where so I"m wondering if 4k being improved is better than 8k, or is it inevitable that it does take the place of 4k. I also read somewhere we could make a bigger jump after 4k, but I'm unsure that will happen. Thoughts?

I doubt that 8K will become "popular" any time soon. Why? Cost of 8K content creation.
Even 4K content is the exception rather than the rule.

That's true, most likely - however everyone in the electronic/media space is itching for what's next. Minus the few of us who'd still be happy with 1080p, but I just don't see anything 4k improvement or 8k being popular for at least 10 years.

People don't replace/upgrade their TV's as much as they'd like us to.

I have a 65" 4k Sony.
And very few 4k sources.

This panel isn't getting replaced until it actually dies. No matter what new thing comes down the pipe.
Even if there were 8k holography available today.

My thought is HDR will be more mainstream before a resolution change. Maybe more buffering on the device so that AI can improve things.

If we need anything we need greater bit depth. Most media today is either 8 or 10 bit depth. But we need 12 bit depth to completely eliminate any hint of moire patterns in color gradients.

It's not just companies its people in general. So many want a better 4k TV and have since 2016 and then they buy a new one every year and if you really got them honest, not much has changed.

Maybe I'm not clued into the right userbase, bu I don't know anyone that does that.

8k tv is likely to be a waste. Don’t get me wrong, with the correct signal source it will look fantastic but the streamed compressed digital sources we have are not good enough to service a quality 8k panel.
8k in anything less than 65 to 75” isn’t going to add any dot pitch improvements either.

1080p to 4k is a pretty huge jump, 4k to 8k is in the realm of diminishing returns.

I run my 4K TV at 1080p for the most part. 65" at regular viewing distance I can't really tell the difference.

I see people moving to OLED and VRR capable panels for gaming. Regular content, hasn't really changed in a while. You've got your blu-ray as the top quality available, most streaming content is compressed quite a bit even if it at 4K.

8K only makes sense on TVs that are too big to be handled with regular vehicles. So they would be catering to a pretty small crowd of people that can afford delivery and installation of the huge monsters that come in crates.
