I have an EPOX VIA KM400 EP--8KMM3I with an 80 gig Maxtor ATA/133 hard
drive. I want to add a 250 gig Maxtor SATA drive as additional storage.
What do I need to set in the BIOS so that the WinXP OS will still boot on
the IDE drive? Thanks.

Hi, TMG.

No matter how you set the BIOS, you will probably have to run WinXP Setup to
let it install the SATA drivers into your copy of WinXP. Perhaps the very
newest WinXP CD-ROM has SATA drivers included, but if not, you'll have to
have the SATA drivers on a floppy and use the F6 key during Setup to install
them.

Whoops! I just reread your message. You don't want to BOOT FROM your SATA
drive, but only use it for storage. In that case, just plug it in and
reboot! Then use WinXP's Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) to create
partitions, assign drive letters, and format them. ;<)

I don't know what your BIOS says about boot sequence. The BIOS for my
8KDA3+ (updated 01/05/05) has a new way of choosing the boot device, but
basically it's still easy to tell it to continue to boot from HDD-0 on IDE.

OK.....thanks. I was thinking that it should be Plug and Play (oops...did I
really say that?). That is why I don't want to disturb the current setup,
just add storage since it is a Media Center PC. I'll press on. Thanks again.
