I had a friend of mine piece together some parts from New Egg for me. It's designed to be a gaming computer. Now, I don't know a whole lot about all this, and he's far better at me than this, so I'm taking his word.

I'm wondering what the build needs or what could be changed to save some $ and deliver the same performance.

So far, the build consists of:

Radeon HD 7850

ditch the 8350 for an i5, same price but i5 is WAY better for gaming.
when you get a cpu bound game you will really notice the difference
skyrim%201920.png

also 16gb ram useless, just get 8gb. 7850 is good but 7870 or gtx660 is better

If he does that he would also need to replace the motherboard and the graphics card seeing as how they are both meant for AMD. This is an AMD build, if he wanted an intel build he would have said $950 Intel build.

In my opinion you are spending way too much on the case that you could put into a better Graphics Card. Like a 7870 LE like this... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202024&Tpk=7870%20xt

Ditch the 16Gb of RAM and go for 8 Gb. Here... http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-PC3-12800-1600mHz-CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B/dp/B004QBUL1C/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=8VLVXAM41J6N&coliid=I3FQ2WLCI45T9K

You can get a better deal on a PSU if you shop around. Like this... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139028

The WD Black Hard Drive is a little much especially since you are new to this, I would suggest this... http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Caviar-Cache-Desktop/dp/B00461G3MS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=8VLVXAM41J6N&coliid=I1CXNS5HI3L450
And getting a SSD with the money you save throughout, it's really worth it.

Also IMHO I would stick with the AMD 8350. Games are starting to utilize more and more cores like Crysis 3. :bounce:

I should have mentioned before that I will be running a 64x OS, and this computer will also be used for college work. Currently I'm a student studying for software engineering and game development/design. It will also be used to make 3D models for projects that I am currently building to place in the ocean for part of my capstone. I'm on a 620GB hard drive right now and this thing is pretty much full with all my class work, a couple games, and other things that I use.

Definitly keep the 8350 then. Also look at 1Tb drives at least probably.

No, the computer I'm currently on is a laptop. This will stay as a mobile work station for my basic school work. I'm going to clear a lot of the space from this and open up as much room as possible so I can focus on school work. The computer build above will have the 1TB hard drive so I can hold the games, models, work, music (speaking of which: sound card???), etc...

Includes another 1Tb drive (since you will probably need it with all your work,) a way better graphics card and a SSD! Plus some $60 if you want a cooler case or need Windows.

Edit: the $60 can also be used if you need an optical drive and if you do want to keep the 16Gb of RAM for modeling and such. (but definitly go with 2x8 like Wisecracker said) Also the Motherboard has decent built in sound.

the ASRock 970 EXTREME3 i would swap out for one that has internal usb3 header
like this one , lose the esata on the back but think more ppl use usb externals then esata
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130679

intel option around same price range could be
mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157304

cpu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115234
or an http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504&Tpk=3570k for overclocking options but cost little bit more

agree with only needing 8gb ram
and uping the graphic card could cost some more but a nice 7870LE or 660ti would hit the sweet spot

Could you possibly link me to the 2x8GB?

What if I were to switch:

Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (your suggestion)

for

Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148834&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

and also remove the 120GB SSD?

Also, use this case instead:
Azza Solano 1000R ATX Full Tower Case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811517006&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

With those new modifications, the new total is $818.48

This is true.

Just to help folks keep up :)

I'm a big fan of the Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 AM3+ for $105. It drops down to the $95-range every few weeks or so.

The 8+2 Phase Power seems to help the Piledrivers run more efficiently, and should provide a seamless transition (with a BIOS update) to the next-gen Steamroller cores in a year or two ...

Edit: I use the OEM Motherboard QVL lists -- essentially, if you have any issue, it gives you the right to complain that you built to their specs  and they tend to view your inquiries with more concern.

Have you settled on the ASRock ??

If you think you will need the 2Tb then go for it but I can not express enough how great an SSD is. Even if its just for your OS it will make your computer extremely fast. and there is no reason you shouldn't have one in a $900 build. But it is your computer ;)

It is for storage just like a hard drive but it is flash memory, there are no mechanical parts. Because of this they are much faster. Load times/boot times, everything on the SSD will be extremely quick.

So, then I could just get a smaller SSD, something like 32GB work fine if I just want to use it to hold the OS (Win 8 64x), whatever else needed to boot the computer, and be able to use the computer for apps as fast as possible?

Minimum I would get even for just Windows OS would be 60Gb. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211601&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=
But seems silly when its not much more $ to get twice the Gb
