Hi

Last summer I got a new computer with an Ati Radeon 9500 Pro. Recently, games started crashing with the VPU Recover message showing up. When I looked inside the case, I see that the fan isn't running anymore...

The card hasn't been used a lot, I believe it was new when I got it, and nothing is overclocked.

So is the fan ruined, or is there anything else that could cause it to stop working?

I have installed the latest ATI drivers, and also tried some older ones.

Just in case it helps, here is the system:
P4 2.67 GHz
AOpen MB
350W AOpen PSU
ATI Radeon 9500 Pro
1 GB Ram
2 Western Digital Harddrives
+ CDRW and DVD

If it is the fan that is the problem, is ok to remove the fan (leaving the heatsink) and somehow putting a system fan on top?

Spin the fan by hand and observe how free it is.

If you can, check fan supply/volts with a multimeter or appropiate test lamp.

Fans that are supplied with new cards are highly efficient and replacment with another type is unadvisable unless researched.

Thanks, I'll see if I can borrow a multimeter from someone. The fan seems to be free enough. For now I'll just have to play with the window open, freezing my feet of ;)

A common 80mm case fan placed under the card in a way that air flows towards the HS with the stopped fan will also do the trick and keepy your feet warm.

Abit IS7 @ 275 FSB, VAGP @ 1.65, OCZ PC4200 RAM @ 550Mhz, P4 2.4 @ 3.3Ghz Vcore @ 1.625, GeXCube Radeon 9600P @ 450/626.
Thermalright SLK-947U, P3 HS @ NB.

You can buy a nice aftermarket VGA cooling HSF for around $12-20, like a Vantec or ThermalTake. Make sure you use Arctic Silver thermal compound when you attach the new fan.
