Hi all - A friend is selling a Gigabyte G1 Gaming 970 for £190 - or- I can get a Gigabyte G1 Gaming 980 ti for £500.

What with the controversy re. dx12, async compute, forthcoming Pascal etc. I am not keen on throwing half a grand on tech that is likely to be quickly superseded in about 9 months (I know that 'new' tech quickly becomes 'old' tech; however, I think that the 28nm chip may grow older quicker amidst the dawn of a 16nm chip release lol)..

I have a 3440x1440 display "and" a 1080p tv. Ideally, I would like to game on the 3440, but I think I could live with 1080p.

On this basis, what would be the smarter choice?

Will the 970 be sufficient for 60fps on 1080p with most settings maxed out? I've presently got an AMD HD5970. Old to say the least but seems to be holding its own with Metal Gear Solid (falls over in Witcher 3).

Thank you in advance

Its true that tech moves to quickly to realistically keep up with it. IF 500 is to much to spend on a piece of hardware, go with what you can afford. No matter what you go with, you'll need to replace the GPU in 2.5 years on average.

If you can afford that 500, do it. It money it tight. Get what you can and enjoy it for what it is. There is no such thing as future proofing.

It depends on how comfortable you want to be. Think of it like this... When pascall comes out no one is gonna want a 970. You could still sell the 980ti on ebay or something and get some money back when you upgrade. What I normally do is wait a couple months after a new card gen comes out and see if the hype is worth it. Currently a 980ti is gonna smash anything you throw at it for a while. When games start demanding more, thats when you look to upgrade.

My advice, if you are okay with the 970 performance, save the money & get the 970 and wait for the upgrade. That would set you up to upgrade right when it comes out...

or

Buy the 980ti & be good for a while (6-8 months) then upgrade to a pascall card when you have the extra cash or when you feel its needed.

We always want the most new and shiny but the 980ti is definitely shiny enough to keep your attention for a while.

Its always good to buy for now. Dont waste any time waiting on the next gen... Maximize your performance and enjoy it now. It will come when it comes and you can start a fund to upgrade to the next gen after maximizing the current gen. Remember, you can always sell the 980ti after you upgrade so you can make some money back.

Thanks for this x24x. I eventually reached the conclusion that you suggested in your post. Thank you for thoughts on this :)
