So i'm pretty torn between the gtx 980 and the 980 ti. Right now I will only be gaming on a 1080p monitor but within the next year or so I will be getting a nice 1440p 144mhz monitor. Should I save my money and stick with the 980, or go for the 980ti for the better performance ill get on the 1440p?
This is my build by the way http://pcpartpicker.com/p/wmjnBm

Definitely go for the gtx 980 ti. The difference in performance versus the difference in price is astounding. The gtx 980ti will get you 60fps in just about any game on ultra settings at 1440p. The extra $100 or so is worth it.

The 980 ti is a Titan X performance for half the cost, really.

It does put the 980 out by about 25% increase in power.

Really, it comes down to what you feel like you can afford versus how badly you're going to want Nvidia's Pascal GPU in 2016.

The GTX 980 and the 980 ti are so powerful that either one will easily last you five or more years of solid 1440p gaming.

I can afford the 980ti. I just didn't know if it was worth it to get it if in a year or two there will be a better card to get for 1440p since I wont be gaming on that resolution for a year or so. I do think i will go for the 980ti though since it'll last me awhile and I can sli if i want 4k in the future.

Well, we have no idea what Nvidia's next line up is going to look like. They only promise high bandwidth stacked memory and "10 times the performance in SLI."

We also have no idea how much they are going to cost. They could be competitively priced or they could be a thousand dollars a card.

And the 980 ti can 4k by itself. lol
(Wouldn't hurt to SLI them, though.)

All the benchmarks ive seen show a single 980ti getting only around 30fps in 4k at max load. I figure in order to get max fps and high res I would need to sli. But thats also just me being picky about frame rate (but who isn't haha)

60 fps is great if you can maintain it. But it's demanding and expensive at 4k. If you have the money brother more power to you. lol

Most people are just happy to play at all.

980 Ti is definitely worth it if you have the money. To be honest with you, I was thinking like you ...4k 40-50fps but that's ultra settings too...hmmm but I'll tell you now. I run 4k at 50fps all day long over 1440 p and 70 FPS, I overclocked mine to 1470ish mhz and it runs like a champ. Even arma3, crysis 3 and metro look and run good in 4k for me. It just looks so much better and is very smooth with this card, no hiccups and it runs 1440 p so easily.
