I plan to buy one of these cards. I have a 900p monitor until I go out and buy 2 1080p's and then I plan to buy a 4k.

The question is, can it handle 4k?

Depends what you mean by 4K. If you mean 4K at 60 FPS, then no. You'll need two 980 Ti's to achieve that type of experience or you'll need to curtail the more graphically demanding features in certain games. Have you considered upgrading to 1440p 144 Hz gaming? A lot of people on this site have, and I hear great things about the experience.

Fury X is AMD's new top end card, supposed to be faster than 980ti, actually touted by AMD as the fastest single GPU card in the world, but that is how it's marketed, no numbers yet. According to AMD, it will be released June 24th and the Fury card is supposed to be July 14th. Both cards will feature HBM, the latest and greatest in GPU VRAM, it's not clocked as high as GDDR5, but it has a 4096bit bus, so the throughput should be crazy. Plus being on-chip, very low latency.

AMD talks a lot about 4k capabilities so it should be very interesting to see how it performs.

That's great, but I don't plan on playing on 4k for a long while after I build my PC until I can afford a monitor.
I've never seen 4k in person, and tbh I'm not even sure if its worth it.
I'm also not a fan of AMD GPU's, but their cpus aren't bad at all.

Even so, if Fury X lives up to the marketing hype (AMD has a bad track record on this), at the very least nVidia will likely respond with price drops or other incentives. It will be out tomorrow so, just wait a few days for things to shake out, one way or another.

Also, in case you hadn't heard, AMD has a totally new CPU architecture (and new socket) called "Zen" coming out sometime next year. Everyone is hoping it will give intel some real competition as it's supposed to be AMD's return to the high end market.

I plan to build my PC in August. So price drops will be significant if they don't hype the card too much, which will be great for me. I plan to build with a 8350. Standard AMD 8 core processor... but I'm stuck in a shell.
I've seen intel's 6 core processor, and I'm in no doubt it would absolutely destroy the 8350 for an extra maybe 200 on my current build. Mind checking my build here and giving advice on what I should do? http://pcpartpicker.com/p/tCcn4D
Also, if you could give me a comparison of the 8350 and the i7-5820K.

Nevermind, would honestly love to go with the i7-5820K over the 8350 but its ddr4...

If you are looking to save a little and are in to overclocking, go with the 8320 and OC to the speed of the 8350, they are identical except for the 0.5ghz. Also, I wouldn't get a MSI motherboard, I'm currently dealing with a client's computer that just over a year now and 2 of the SATA ports have gone bad, and the warranty is up. This has been a common thing for me when dealing with MSI products. Personally, I use ASUS and Asrock in all my builds and have yet to have any issues.

As for the i7, it's not just the DDR4 and CPU that is more expensive, the motherboards are as well and you need 4 RAM modules to take advantage of quad channel.

The price of the 980ti and Fury X, IIRC, Fury X is supposed to outperform the 980ti and will be a little cheaper. If that is proven true, there should be a price cut by nVidia or (as they did in the past) a big game bundle. Either way, you win if you're set on going nVidia.

Well, since I have a total of 6 sata ports - I wouldn't mind two of them going bad although this is not good, I don't mind it as I'll only be using one hard drive and one SSD. Maybe 3 at most. So that doesn't bug me. Other then that this msi board is solid and all I need honestly. Also, I wanted to get the 8350 so that I can overclock at the stock speed, to 4.5 or 4.7 with my hyper 212 evo. Shouldn't be hard.

Your opinion on this?

I wasn't sure you were planning to OC much so thought that was a good option. While it is possible to get a 8320 to 4.6ghz, you have a better chance in the silicon lottery of getting that or a little higher with a 8350 due to the binning process that AMD does. I read that some people have been lucky enough to get a 8350 up to 5.1ghz, which is pretty good. But there was some serious cooling in there. Good luck with the build, should be fun!

do not get any FX if your going with a 980 ti. It will bottleneck like crazy, despite the attempts to overclock it. Seriously, its 3 years old and counting, don't bother. Intel is supposed to launch Skylake with the z170 chipset this fall, which will succeed z97 as the new mainstream platform. Id recommend getting an i7 6700k when it comes out. X99 is overkill and FX is underkill. If you have patience though, you can wait until AMD launches the Zen CPU's which are supposed to be a lot better. But thats in 2016.

I figured it would.
I plan to build my PC this summer. Should I go DDR4 with the mobo and the intel haswell-e 6core?
Would be like a extra 500 bucks, bringing my build to 2k total but thats fine with me i guess.

Well the purpose of buying it would be future proofing
idk i'll figure out the prices in a min, if its 2k thats not bad then

i have a 980ti running 4k max settings on new batman 19fps lowest, 32fps avg, witcher 3 runs max everything at 22fps lowest, 36fps avg.
crysis 3 max all 4k is a killer at 19 to 25fps.
but i am running it bottlenecked until tomorrow morning on AMD A10 7850 CPU. 8gb DDR3 RAM and SSD
once i have the new i7 5820k in and the new MSI x99 MOBO with 16gb DDR4 ram should run smooth.

The GTX980TI is impressive to say the least. with right setup across board it will fly with 4k gaming at easy 30+FPS Min.

oh nice you're getting the 6 core, let me know how that goes. i plan to get the same

will do buddy
BTW Tom dont hit the AMD CPU. if anything splash the extra and get the i7 4790 kind of card or if can the 5820k or better. They will future proof for while and run some amazing specs. Also dude if you havent already then SSD should be on the list.
Id say 850 EVO Samsung 500gb.
currently 147 quid on scan.
MOBO CPU and RAM should hit around 600 quid atm and the GPU at 580ish. so aim £1200 then case and a nice 750W Gold PSU. then its just the basics of that SSD and maybe hard drive of 200 quid and BDRW drive about 50 quid.
all in minus a monitor or OS should cost in about £1500.

Alright thanks man. I really would like a intel 6 core, would be an absolute monster but I don't want the cost of DDR4 memory and mobos. So I might go with a quad core i7 or maybe if there's a 6 core ddr3...

wait for skylake to come out. It will only require dual channel ddr4, and will be upgradeable for the next 2 years. It'll be a new socket, so Intel is bound to put a second generation of CPU's on it. It'll be cheaper than X99 and Haswell-E.

If you're planning of 4K gaming, you should just wait. This is the same crap that happened with 1080p (TRUE HD) when it first came out. These cards won't even hold you past next year when newer games with more demanding settings will utterly destroy 4K gaming on any single GPU, even a TITAN BLACK....

It's just too soon to be getting into 4K gaming, unless you've got money burning a hole in your pocket.

Just stick with 1080p, buy a card that will hold you over for the next 3 years, and just wait it out. The 4K gaming thing isn't ready for mainstream, so you're not going to be getting a good performance out of it with decent settings (I mean, why play 4K resolution if all the settings are set to garbage) this year, or the next.

Anyway, it's all up to you, but my verdict on 4K gaming is -> WAIT.

I know, I don't plan to play on 4k for a long time.

Then don't buy a card for 4K. If it's gonna be a long time before you switch to 4K there will be cards out by then that destroy the 980Ti. Buy a card for the resolution you want to play today.

By the time you upgrade to 4K you are going to have to upgrade your GPU either way. Games continue to demand more power every year. What is relevant today won't be in a year or two.

Should I get a 970 then?
