Hello , I'm trying to save as much money as possible, I play in 4k , what would be better for 4k gameplay , 2 980 tis or a 1080?

Solution
Two GTX 980 ti's theoretically perform better. But some games do not have full SLI support, so in those cases a single gtx 1080 performs better (until the drivers support it). But in most games the 2 gtx 980ti's will be the better choice.

The 980 Ti will perform better in most instances .... by how much, we won't know until the "real" (3rd party) 1080s come out. But still... that's not enough to get over 60 fps in the most demanding games at highest settings.

Until 4k gets 120+Hz, and cards exist to drive it, haven't been recommending 4k.... maybe the 1080 Ti SLI will do it ... but still haven't as yet seen a 4k monitor w/ Display Port 1.4 or even a cable for sale that can do it. I expect that with the new 10xx series being DP 1.4 equipped, monitors will soon follow.

i was Asking why is he considering 2x 980 ti why not 2x 1080 ? they are the same price

on paper, if you can even get one 1080

Quality non-reference 980 Tis can now be had for under $500; meanwhile only reference 1080s exist at $700....that's a $400 price difference, not to mention that all FE cards tested so far are throttling.

NVIDIA’s own reference design suffers from severe throttling just after few minutes. It probably wouldn’t be that bad if not the frequency spikes. While average clock is somewhere around officially stated boost clock, those spikes cause micro-stuttering, which negatively affects gaming experience.

Hardware.info:

Founders Edition suffers from a horrendous amount of throttling and it runs +- 150 MHz lower all the time.

Meanwhile, MSI GTX 1080 GAMING X generates almost a straight line for GPU frequency (~1910 MHz), with no spikes and rather constant sub-70 C temperature. This should mean that the gaming experience will be much better, and card should theoretically generate better results in most tests. Also according to H.I. this is also the best custom design they so far tested.

I expect that the 1080, like the 980 will be an overlooked / forgotten card once the 1080 Ti comes out. The reference 980 overclocked 9%, the 3rd party ones as much as 31+%. So yes, if you must buy today, I'd take two non-reference 980 Tis over two 1080s. That choice might change once the the non-reference cards arrive.
