980 vs k2100 (for CAD/rendering)

I'm in the market for a new computer for school. I will be doing heavy 3d and graphics work with GPU acceleration. I have to go with Nvidia due to CUDA. At the moment there are 2 GPUs that are in the top of the line (low profile) machines these are of course the 980m (gaming laptops) and k2100 (workstations). Let me get this out of the way. I HAVE A GAMING RIG FOR GAMING THIS IS FOR WORK. I cant help but wonder if the 980m will have better performance in 3d software and GPU rendering because it seems to be so far superior for for gaming. If someone could speak to the difference between these two I would be great full.

Cad uses directx so more power does better and gpu rendering favors the same. But cad has no gpu rendering so are you using a 3rd party or another software? Is it safe to assume it uses cuda since cad doesn't?
