9800 Pro Versus 6600 GT

So, I've been looking to spend 200 dollars on a video card, and just CANNOT seem to find a good fit.

I've seen a lot of nice cards around 175, like the 6600 GT - but to make the jump to something like a X800 XL or a 6800...

So, I am wondering, how terrible is a 9800 Pro? Because I could get a nice All in Wonder 9800 Pro... and that would be very nice, to watch TV and whatnot...

I am upgrading from an fx5200, with a nice fat score of 285 on 3dMark05.. lol so I think it should make a difference..

BUT is the difference between the 9800 and a 6600 GT really that big? Let me know.

Yeah, the 6600 GT is between 5% and 15% better than the 9800 PRO, if memory serves.

They're pretty close though.

Well, I mean for the price difference, I like the All IN Wonder..

However, what can I get for 200 bucks BETTER than either of these?

if ur talkin agp, which i think u are wit hthose prices, id say get a 6800 vanilla or an x800gto... they both have 12 pipeslines, whereas the 6600gt and 9800 have 8, i believe the 9800 and 6600gt both have 128 bit interfaces, whereas the 6800 vanilla and x800gto have 256, both of those cards can be had for under 200, the 6800 being 150ish and the x800gto beinbg 194 or somthing... id go for the x800gto over any of the cards ive meantioned... also u could go to compsa and get an x850pro for 179... thats one of the best agp deals ot there... but between 6600gt and 9800 6600gt wins... 9800 AIW is the same speed as a 9800pro, argrably slower...

You can get a 6800GS or a X800GTO for about $200, and they're much better.

What's the stats on each? Anyone know?

The 6600 GT kills the 9800 Pro AGP.
If you can afford a little more, the 7800GS kills the 6600 GT.

And that is as good as AGP can get.

what processor/how much ram do u have? comming from an fx5200 i cant see it being a blazing fast computer, if its an athlon xp or old p4 id suggest not spending over 200 on a card, like u said, the 7800gs would be like throwing away money because agp is dead and the rest of ur comp would be the bottleneck, id suggest an x800gto, thats about the best u can get for ur money...

thats plenty for gaming, as long as u have at least 1 gb of memory get the x800gto, if u have 512 memory, get another stick and the 6800 vanilla... that card has 12 pipes 256 bit interface 350/700 clock speeds i think, its basically a 6800gs but clocked slower, if ur lucky u may get one that overclocks very nicely...

I'm sorry, are you looking for an AGP or PCI-E card You said you have an Athlon 64 3200. Is that Socket 754???

I found these 2 AGPs for under $200.00 on the Egg.

Radeon 9800XT which was the cream of the crop "in its day", not anymore however.

And this X800GTO. which is a better card.

However if your running Socket 939 and not an Asrock Dual board, you should have a PCI-E slot and shouldn't be considering AGP. There's a plethora of sub $200 cards in PCI-E (7600GT...anyone...anyone)

Actually the 6800 vanilla is 325/600 I believe... I have mine clocked at... 400/750 I believe, and it runs stuff like The Battle for Middle-Earth 2, Half-Life 2, and F.E.A.R. very nicely (like high but not max graphics).

It's a little bit more, but it's worth it. However, for $174 you can get a 256 mb GeForce 6800 vanilla @ 350/540 clockspeeds (but you can easily raise that up with RivaTuner). Personally, I would go with the GS. I know you said $200, but it's seriously worth the extra $20.

The 6600GT is a lot better than the 9800 Pro.

57 fps vs 32 fps in Doom 3 for example. Plus having Shader 3.0

There are cards better than both for AGP anyway.
But ya, More accurate to say the 6600GT kills the 9600 pro.

If you can do the bios unlock on a 9800pro to a 9800xt like I have, and this only works on limited number of 9800pro with the right rv350/60?? anyone still remember? The 9800xt is roughly even with a 6600gt. But for $200, the x850xt can be had just by shopping around and waiting for the right deal.

Too bad you didn't ask this months ago, back when the AIW X800XT could be found for under $250 after a $50 rebate. Rebates have been gone and prices have been around $300+ since. It spanks the 6600GT and 9800 pro and has the AIW features you desire, plus a remote even. it's ahead of a 6800GS but not quite as fast as a 7800GS.

By your 6600GT prices, something tells me you are not in the USA. 6600GT AGP should be $120-150 online in the USA.

i got an x700pro at compusa for 129... probably one of the better agp deals, i dun think toms did an accurate review of it, it may not beat the 6600gt in doom3 but i can run hl2 maxxed 2/4aa af and get 100 fps... thats pretty good for 130 bux... its 160 now though :/ go to compusa, they usualyl have really good deals... sometimes

x1600pro is on par with an x700pro, beating it in most games i believe, it also has sm3.0, so if ur gonna get a more of a budget card get the x1600pro... too bad it wasnt out when i got my card 🙁... but the x700 and x1600 both have 128 bit interface, meaning it will be a bit slower than the 256 bit interface 6800 vanilla gs x800gto and so on...

im still going to suggest a 6800 and another 512 of memory if u need/can afford it
