Hi,

I was lead to believe that if you had an AGP8x motherboard that you could put alll AGP 8x Videocards in that motherboard, so i thought i would have no problem if i bought a Radeon 9800Pro to put in my Giga-Byte GA-7VT600-P-L (Link Below).

However one of my friends was telling me the other day, that if you wanted to place a Radeon "Pro" videocard in the motherboard it must support the "Pro" specifications as it is longer or something like that he was saying.

Basically i want to know will my motherboard support a Radeon 9800 Pro.

Also whilst i'm here i might as well ask, which brand would you guys recommend, i have seen some Ge-Cube Radeon 9800Pro Xtreme Editions which are clocked higher than a normal radeon 9800Pro at a reasonable price, wpould this card be any good, or would i be better off getting a normal 9800Pro in a good brand like Leadtek or Powercolor.

He's thinking about the old 3.3v cards. Your board will support that card just fine. Sapphire makes a better Radeon card than PowerColor.

ok, thanx for that, i'll tell him for real that he is a dick now that i know for sure 😉.

Does anyone know the answer ti my final question i asked, i can only get my hands on one of these 3 videocards it seems.

Power Color Radeon 9800Pro.
Ge-Cube Radeon 9800Pro.
Ge-Cube Radeon 9800Pro Extreme.

Which would you recomend?

This is the one that I bought:
HIS exalibur ice q platinum 9800pro

I found it challenging to find HIS or "hightech" or "Hightech Information Systems" HIS Intro page It is listed on new egg as "hightech" here

non ice q model
In the Tom's article which gave it the editor's choice here
the ice q platinum model performed a bit better than the reference ati model that is comparable in price. They now make the fan controller bracket (hot air exhaust and fan high low control) separate to alleviate the problem of getting the switch to clear when installing in some case/mobo combinations. This now-solved problem was noted on the digit-life review here . The ramsinks are also now different, better looking, and better. They are larger heatsinks which bridge two ram chips rather than single individual ones.
I saw the editor's choice award article some months back and researched them more. I also saw the excellent faq guide here and found that extremely helpful.

OK, was gonna ask why you were limited to those. Since it seem syou really are, I'd prboably get the Power color, but realize you'll probably have to replace the fan. If you can find them in your ao, I'd suggest the Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer, which is on the HIS board, an dcan be put on any other 9800 Pro you want to. I have one on mine, and loev it. It's a lot quiteter than the stock one, and adds an extra exhuast.

I used the Tom's biz rate search to find stuff here in the States. Then I found that to really find some things I had to go to individual companies and look through their sites. If you have a user rated search the bizrate or pricewatch, etc. there perhaps you could pick out a company with good ratings and look carefully on their site?

Yea, going by that faq quide I think powercolor is a safer bet than the other if those are your two choices.

Your friend was probably confused by "AGP Pro" slots, which are for true professional graphics workstation cards. The 9800 Pro is NOT an "AGP Pro" card.
