This morning I got up and there was no visual on my screen. Switched my VGA cord to an HDMI and still no luck. Put the HDMI into the MOBO out instead of the GPU out and still no luck. Switched the slots that my GPU was in and rebooted the computer and it started power cycling about every 15 seconds. After removing the GPU from the case and putting the HDMI into the MOBO the computer works as it should so I am to believe my GPU has fried 🙁

I have a Raedon HD 7850. (HD7870 GHZ EDITION 2G GDDR5 PCI-E DL-DVI-I+SL-DVI-D / HDMI / DP OC VERSION LITE) I purchased it from Newegg in 2013 and there was a 2 year warranty so it is no longer covered. I do not have the extra money to buy a brand new card right now, was actually going to buy one this Black Friday if I found the right deal.

Are there any troubleshooting steps I can take to see if I can get it working? (soldering somewhere or just any black magic that gets these working) This computer was my first build so this is my first issue of hardware failing. I understand it happens but if there is anything I can try I will, card is not covered under warranty so I have nothing to lose.

Thanks in advance.

The chance of it being the PSU is pretty low. But like I said that's the only other thing it could be. But yeah, the chances that the PSU has run just fine all this time and is just now all of a sudden not able to supply power to the GPU enough just to boot (but still enough to run the rest of the system without the GPU) is highly unlikely. It is worth a shot though.
If its fried, its fried. Nothing you can really do about it except get a new one, and it definitely sounds like its fried.

You could put it into a different rig and see if it works in another rig if it works in another rig could be the PSU, but that is unlikely. Other than that, there's nothing else. It's obviously the GPU since you took it out and your computer worked.

You're lucky it lasted as long as it did. Things have a tendency to die shortly after the warranty expires 😀

That's why all the premium products have long warranties, and yet another reason they are worth buying.

Haha yes I have learned a valuable lesson. The next one I buy will have a longer or lifetime warranty. I've never overclocked or any other forms of "abuse" for lack of a better word. Cleaned regularly but I understand this stuff does have a certain lifespan.

Unfortunately I do not at my house, I may be able to try in the next couple of days.

Thanks for the replies. I will try it, not going to hurt anything. Like I said don't want to drop the money on one right now so it's worth a shot. When I was troubleshooting I noticed my fan in my PSU would start when the computer was turned on and then stop shortly after that. Don't know if that is normal and it kicks on at a certain temp or if it is faulty.
