Exactly as the title states. The 9900KS was announced today and intel says its binned. What does that mean? Also, given the fact that the chip will have hardware mitigations against the recent vulnerabilities, will I still need windows updates and can I disable them?

Binning basically means intel will only ship the best quality processors they manufacturer.

Some binned special edition chips from intel are the i7 8086k and I9 9900ks, basically the highest quality and upclocked versions of the i7 8700k and I9 9900k respectively.
If you buy a 9900ks, it will have higher stock clocks and the potential to overclock more than a 9900k. Realistically you likely cant overclock either much since the stock 5ghz clocks are pushing the limits of the architecture.

So the 9900KS has an all-ore turbo of 5 GHz (300 MHz higher), and, minimum base clock is now 4.0 GHz (400 MHz higher); those are significant jumps, but, whether it will hold off a Ryzen 12 core in content creation is another story...(seems doubtful, based on some recent leaks on how well a new lowly 6 core is scoring in Geekbench, if the leaks are accurate)

As to the original 'binning' question, these are the CPUs that have proven stable at higher base and turbo clock speeds, and therefore are designated as a new model variation. (Makes sense, given the number of overclocking enthusiasts seeking a perceived all core 5 GHz utopia...)

For all who haven't seen, a benchmark figure popped up that confirms some of the data from the Adored TV leak is correct.

We saw a recent Geekbench benchmark pop up for a new AMD Matisse cpu with 6 cores, 12 threads, 3.2 base, and 3.99 boost (roughly 4ghz).
The AdoredTV leak months ago showed the Ryzen 3300 having identical specs:
Ryzen 3 3300 6 / 12 - 3.2 / 4.0GHz 50W $99
This leads me to believe some of the other info on that table is correct.

Note that the table also showed:
Ryzen 7 3700X 12 / 24 - 4.2 / 5.0GHz 105W $329
If this is true, this CPU will cream the 9900k.

If those 3700X specs are accurate, and if gaming performance jumps proportionately with CInebench results....it will be very good times for AMD!

Matching/exceeding the 9900K (and new 9900KS) results in gaming is going to be quite tough, hopefully we'll get some more results within 24 hours!

I do not believe that that specific 6-core/12-thread CPU was a Ryzen 3 variant. AMD would shoot themselves in the foot with the Ryzen 5 3400G, which is a 4-core/8-thread Picasso APU. They just can't put such an APU above a 6-core/12-thread Matisse CPU in the product stack when it underperforms it in every way.

Anyway, we will probably know more in just a few hours.
