A antivirus question

Would installing an antivirus on a computer potentially already infected invalidate the antivirus? I installed Avast after being told 360 security wasn't up to snuff.

Many virus infections actively prevent or block installation of a new AV.

Solution?
With many of the current AV applications, you can create a bootable scanning tool.
Boot from that and scan. No installation needed.

I would scan it with this first:

If clear then go with Avira FREE.

I mean Avast is already installed. I am asking if any viruses out there can modify the installation somehow so that it can't be seen. I did a bootup scan with it as well as a full system scan.

If the Antivirus installed successfully you should be fine , if there is a bad virus it will usually block the whole installation

Ah I was just worried when I had Windows 7 stop working. Rebooted fine. Then I installed a game with gameguard and when GG tried to start up it and several other things running all stopped working.
