[SOLVED] a lil help on upgrading old memory?

that's the ram I currently have ^^
2 sticks of 4 gb

I want to get 2 sticks of 8 gig and I'm looking at this on amazon

so, I guess mine is CL 9 and this is CL 11, which prob doesn't matter
but mine says 4Gx16, which I guess the 4G is the amount, but the amazon one says 2Rx8, which is maybe an 8 gb stick of dual rank?
anyway, my question is what's the difference there -- 4Gx16 and 2Rx8 and does it matter?
I don't think I care about CL difference

after you clean out that dirty cpu fan

check how much and what type of ram your motherboard can handle. some don't like multiple dual rank sticks or can handle 2 and not 4 or any other weird combo of needs. then get what you can that fits your wants/needs. you can post your mobo model and can look it up for you if you don't know what you are looking for.

Make and model motherboard?

You need to refer to the applicable motherboard's User Guide/Manual for supported RAM modules and RAM configurations.

In many cases the User Guide will refer you to the Manufacturer's website for more up-to-date information. More specifically the QVL (Qualified Vendor's List).

And details do matter - very much.

Do not mix ram like that. It can cause instability, in your system. Also clean that poor thing.

Your manual states 2 dimms, with max of 16gb. So you would need a brand new 2x8gb kit such as this. Always buy an actual kit, instead of 2 separate sticks.

The 4gx16 and 2rx8 have to do with ram rank.

Page vi of the manual lists the supported memory. And does refer the reader to the Asus QVL.

Paragraph 1.4.2 Memory Configurations begins on Page 1-7

Read all carefully to ensure that you purchase supported memory and that the memory is correctly installed and configured thereafter.

And yes you do need to clean that case. Heat is an enemy of electronics so some "housecleaning" is in order.

You aren't doing it right, buying 2 separate sticks. The link you provided was for single 8gb sticks. You want a matched pair, which would have two 8gb sticks, in a single package. They are certified to run together.
