A question about Joystick Calibration

Can someone please explain why in the year 2009 do we still have to calibrate joystick and control pads (granted it only takes a couple of seconds in the game) just to get things to hold centre? I've never understood why a PC has to calibrate it's gaming peripherals whereas consoles you don't.

If I had to guess I would say it's probably due to the hundreds of thousands of possible combinations of hardware and software as well as the different OS's they would be used on.

Old thread I know, but consoles actually perform calibration during initial startup without you realising it.

Try switching on your console while holding an analogue stick in one direction and see what happens 😉
