Question A quick question. 4090 vs 4080 electricity? Thanks for any help.

Does a 4090 use a LOT more electricity than a 4080?
When the PC is left on all day.

I know it draws more power than the 4080. I was looking to get a 1000w plat PSU?

I just wondered if the 4090 is like an electricity monster.

Again, I realise this sounds ridiculous.
As in..
"If you have enough to buy a 4090, why are you worrying about electricity?"

But here in England the cost of electricity is ridiculous.
And I'll be honest, I have saved for a new rig for a long time.

I appreciate any help with this.
As I can afford a 4090, and would like one, but not if the electric cost is a Huge difference to a 4080.

The 4090 uses about 50% more power than the 4080, regardless of scenario.

Since building mine in late April my light bill went up $10 the first month and $25 the 2nd month.

I don’t blame it on the 4090 though... I blame it on the same thing I do every year… summer air conditioning costs.

It’s still less than $1 per day no matter the reason. Who cares…

The 4090 has more VRAM so no matter what it's going to end up using more power in idle/low power usage situations there's just nothing that can stop that part. Under load a 4090 might end up giving you more performance/watt when given equal power consumption, but that's about the only place you might get a benefit when referring to power consumption.

At stand-by, in sleep mode?
Why is it on all day if you aren't doing anything on it.

If you are just browsing the web all day you can get an android box/raspberry pi for that and have the lowest power usage ever.
Or just keep using your current system for low demanding things, if it has an iGPU take out the discreet one and use it that way.

Take a cost of 34 p / kWh (the average, according to some, although more likely on the high side. Take the TDP of the 4090 as 450 W (it'll spike more occasionally, but it won't always be running at that). Let's say you game on it heavily three hours a day, every single day, and ignore other uses as noise.

0.45 kW * 3 hrs/day * 365 days * £0.34 / kWh ~ £170 per year.

If the 4090 uses 50% more power than the 4080, it costs an extra £56 per year.

Or, every hour you spend using the card heavily will cost an extra 5p. Doing other stuff, maybe an extra couple of pence per hour?

The information really has helped me make my mind up.
I'll go for the 4080, it's still massively more powerful than my existing GPU.

If I may ask one last 4080 related question on here.

Looking on amazon, these two cards get great ratings.

Does anyone know if one of these stands out, (or a different one altogether) as the best one to go for?
My existing GPU is as MSI, and it has been incredible over the years.
But I heard good things of this ASUS 4080.

When it comes to video cards I've always just stuck to the brand that's worked for me unless the pricing was bad or they'd had a string of issues (everything from my GTX 275 to 1660 Ti were MSI, and price was the only reason I went EVGA this current one).
