[SOLVED] A quick question for 9700k owners

Hello guys.Do you think it's time to upgrade our 9700k?
If yes/no,then why??

Also,as some leaks say,3080 will be 20% better than 2080ti,will 9700k be able to handle 3080/3080ti.

Any feedback is higly appreciated.Thanks.

As expected, all Ampere cards are getting PCIe 4.0 X16 support, and the RTX 3080 Ti in particular will get 3x DisplayPort 2.0 + 1x HDMI 2.1 video outputs that support up to 10K resolutions. ... Tom does have most of the specs for the GA102 SKU (RTX 3080 Ti), though.May 12, 2020

What resolution are you playing at? However the 9700k won’t have any problems, it’s still up their in the top CPU’s for gaming. It seems highly unlikely pcie 4.0 will add any benefit as from what I’ve read even a 2080Ti doesn’t come close to utilising the full 3.0 bandwidth. You should not be intending to run a 3080/Ti on 1080p and at 1440p, 4K or other higher resolution the limiting factor is still likely to be the gpu and not a 9700k.

Thanks for replying.i am playing at 1440p@144hz .currently using 2070 super.
My concern is as next gen consoles are launching with 16 threads,9700k might age sooner due to upcoming games optimized for utilizing more and more threads.

You cannot compare pc hardware to consoles but if I go along with it the Series X only goes up to 3.6GHz with SMT, the 9700k should easily oc to 5.0 on all threads. Also while games do push the limits of hardware over time they also want to have their game to run well on average gaming systems otherwise people won’t buy it. We don’t know the future but at the moment the 9700k at 1440p is a very powerful cpu that has plenty of headroom for next gen gpu’s.

You are right .i didn't even think of that.i was going to sell my 9700k(that i bought a few months ago),at lower price to buy a new 9900k or 10700k for getting those extra threads.glad i came here first to get some suggestion .i will use this money later to upgrade my gpu to 3000 series first and then see if 9700k needs to be upgraded or not.thanks a lot for your valuable feedback,and saving my money too.

If primarily focused on gaming, all the comparisons I've seen at 1080P and 1440P show the 9700K a bit faster than all Ryzens, including the 3800X and 3900X.

If determined to live-stream while gaming, chat, and perhaps do Genome Folding and editing while gaming*, there are better choices with both more threads and cores.

If you are a gamer get a i5 9600kf , the FPS is the same, and even sometimes better, overcloak it to 5ghz with 1.4 volts and you will have a 200$ beast, I reccomend nzxt kraken x52 cooling , because it's very cheap now and its very reliable.
If you need it for something else, better get a Ryzen because intel right now is only good for gaming.
The rtx 3080 is gonna be very fast , there are some benchmarks where it's clearly seen that an Ampere gpu is 43% faster than rtx 2080ti, but it might be a titan 3000 or rtx 3060, because nvidia kinda messed up with rtx and they will probably compensate for that with the new gen or mess up even worse.

No. Becouse Why would i? I have no issues with it and my 2070S and until i feel that its geeting to slow i will not change it for just the sake of changing it

Op already has the 9700k there is no reason to downgrade to a 9600kf.

That would depend on the game and still a moot point as the OP already has the 9700k and most would agreed going from an 8 core cpu to a 6 core cpu of the same family is a downgrade. Looks like more of the horrible advice you have been giving as of late.

The RTX 2070 Super is basically a cut-down version of the RTX 2080. As far as 1440 P gaming goes it is no slouch. I would wait and see what happens with the RTX 3080 launch. It may not perform up to expectations. Let Nvidia and the OEM manufacturers work out the kinks first.

Bizarre answers in this thread.

No one knows what the 3080 3070 etc will be able to do, but from unofficial leaks it appears that 3070=2080 and 3060=2070. Based on that, the 3080 will probably be ~20-40% faster than a 2080.

As far as core count and threads becoming more relevant, don't count on it. That argument has been made repeatedly for > 10 years now. Most games can't effectively make use of more than 4 cores, and there are even fewer that can effectively use more than 6 cores.

The difference in FPS between a 9700K and the top gaming chip out right now the 10900K with a 2080Ti is about 3.8%. You'll see even less difference with a lesser GPU.

The only real question is, how much more of a difference will CPU make with the even faster 30XX series cards, specifically the 3080 and 3080Ti which don't really have good comparison points with existing 20XX series cards.
