A10-7850k without integrated graphics, and with a dedicated GPU

I want to build a mini itx gaming pc in the Lian Li PC-TU100. Only small form factor gpus can fit, but they are $250. So, i want to buy the a10-7850k, and put in a dedicated gpu later. So my question is, without dedicated graphics, what does the a10 7850k compare to? Also, is there a way to shut down the gpu and let the integrated gpu take over when not gaming, to keep temps and noise down?

its not bad and performing similarly as its gpu-less friends fx4300 or athlon x4-760k... which may also perform similar as a low/mid-range i5

The GPU of the A10-7850k is very similar to a Radeon 7750, both feature 512 shader cores. However it depends a lot on the RAM you're using, as the integrated GPU uses your RAM as dedicated VRAM. So the faster the RAM, the better performance.

The integrated GPU will shut off whenever you install dedicated GPU into the build. You will have to enable crossfire manually to make the integrated GPU run with the dedicated.

also; when you install a dedicated gpu, integrated gpu automatically gets shutdown by bios, unless you specifically turn it on for a seperate monitor or x-fire with proper dedicated gpu

so it goes the same way... A10-7850K can perform as well as another 7730/7750. both of which are more expensive than the price difference of those cpu's plus it gives you the ability to crossfire it with those dedicated gpus when he will have enough cash to splash.

Hey everyone, thanks for the quick response! However, there are no mini itx am3+ boards. Thats why i need an fm2 or fm2+ board, so no fx series. The integrated graphics on i3s suck, and i cant afford a dedicated gpu with an i3. About what it compares to, but you skimmed over the dedicated gpu. Someone mentioned running a display on the integrated gpu, and another on the dedicated. How do you do that?

enable both integrated and dedicated gpu's through bios. log in to your op. sys. install drivers for both. you must be able see both gpu's in enabled and working properly in device manager.
then it is easy, just connect 2 separate monitors through the hdmi or vga or dvi connectors on both motherboard (for integrated) and you know the dedicated gpu connection...
voila!
set the desktop through op. sys. user interface or settings on which monitor you'd like to see... just like setting external projector or TV connection... its easy...

Something to think about:
Amd Athlon x4 760K + HD 7770 = 190$
Amd A10-7850K = 180$ + need to buy faster ram and more of it :)
But of couse you can game with AMD's new Kaveri APU for the time waiting to save the money for GPU. And in 720p resolution 7850K does shine :)

Don't forget these 2 points:
1 The whole point of the kaveri apu is in the future the igpu will help with cpu tasks due to HSA/HUMA which means it isnt going to be sitting idle taking up 'l3' space
2 If your are using a dgpu and fancy HSA/Fm2+ there's no point in buying the highest kaveri, maybe wait for the a8-7600 to come out or the a8'k' if there is one, (120$ rumoured a8-7600 price) which is still a HSA apu.

Let me remind you that AMD's wildest marketing claims regarding Kaveri's performance have not materialized yet. The power use went down, which is good, but performance of the CPU portion of APU barely improved. And even though no one has benchmarked Kaveri against a dedicated HD graphics 7730 or 7750, looking at the available benchmarks and comparing to Richland APUs, I still doubt Kaveri A10 is close to even HD 7730. You can use fast DDR3 memory, but the dedicated GPUs use even faster GDDR. If you're building something with a dedicated GPU for $110-130, use Intel Core i3 and AMD Kaveri A8-7600. The i3 is probably a little faster and uses less energy underload, but AMD gives you a promise of HSA.. whenever HSA enabled applications arrive. You can buy the A8 right now and check if it works for you. If the performance is adequate then you don't need to add a GPU. If you need to add a GPU, then you won't lose too much compared to not buying a similar priced Core i3.
