A10 9600p vs I5 7200U

Im looking at 2 similar laptop only specs that differ

A10 9600p 12gb Ram $299

I5 7200u 8gb Ram $399

I wont be gaming on it, and 8GB is more than enough for anything I do. Is the performance of the 7200U high enough to warrant the 33% extra cost? I cant find any direct comparisons.

the a10 is 4 cores running at 2.4ghz, turbo to 3.3

the i5 is 2 cores with 4 threads, the u means that is low power consumption model, this usually means that battery will last longer but the cpu performace is reduced

i have used many u cpus including i7, i am not amazed by their performance, if it doesn't offer a hughe batery and promises 10 hours of battery life, the a10 is to me a better offer

try to see if the i5 has better keyboard, for me on a laptop the keyboard is vital, i can accept a bath trackpad but not a bad keyboard

also the screen, my a8 has a non reflective screen, if one of those has it and you like that feature i would consider that here, not just the cpu

for the sole cpu power, they are more or less similar but i do like more 4 real cores, so a10 has more sense to me, especially if it comes with a ssd

The i5's performance per clock is something like 50-60% better, and despite having fewer cores, a combination of that and hyperthreading actually makes it as powerful, if not a bit more powerful than the A10 in perfectly threaded workloads, and significantly faster in things that aren't as well threaded. All else being equal, the i5 will have similar to slightly slower integrated graphics, but a significant battery life advantage.

i used to believe the more powerful approach, it is not accurate, it does offer like 30% more cpu power but you don't really feel it, if it was a normal i5, it would be 100% correct, with the u series, that thing is slow, as slow as the a10, basically, but more expensive

with the disadvantage of the fewer cores that for some tasks is not really a issue but for others is

the a10 has a better gpu in the cpu than the i5, if none of those laptops has a dedicated gpu i would consider that alot

i5 is more powerful than the A10 with 4 thread task loads as well.

I'll give you, the Ivy Bridge and Haswell i5us were rather slow due to the low clockspeeds. I have a 4210u and think it's pokey.The Broadwell and up - and especially Skylake/Kaby Lake i5/i7us are quite zippy for everyday usability. Zero complaints from me.

HD 530+ graphics ain't bad either.

The i5-7200u offers better processing performance than the A10-9600p. It also uses less power so all things being equal, a laptop with the i5-7200u will last longer than the A10-9600p.
