A64 - which format will last...

My reluctance to dive into the 64bit world has been justified! Now there are three chip formats for Athlon 64 - Socket 940, Socket 939, and Socket 754. Sure glad I didn't buy one last year, but I've been thinking of getting into them lately. So, here's the question - which of the three socket types is going to become the standard? Which will last for the next 4 years? Is it better to wait for the 90nm technology to filter down to the desktop chips first?Any guesses? Any opinions? Sure would hate to buy an evolutionary dead end...

Doesn't seem that any chipset/socket will last more than a couple of years.
The 939 is the latest, for now.

they'll all be around for a long while:
940 is for servers (opteron/ requires registered RAM)
939 is High-performance Desktops (A64 & FX, Dual channel RAM)
754 is for the more 'value' segment (Sempron)

The performance difference between 754 and 939 at the same speeds is tiny, because Dual Channel doesn't benefit the A64 architecture much (When they start producing Dual Core chips it might have more impact, but that's just me guessing), but They have no plans to release any 754 A64s above a 3700+ Rating.

I suspect 754 will die first, but it'll be about for a couple of years yet.

939 should be around for a long time - look how long AMD stuck with Socket A (462).

I dont think that socket 754 will die first. Both that socket and the 939 are targetted at different market. Cheap system are very popular in Asia, for exemple. So as long as there will be a market for economical system, socket 754 should be there until new technology ask for different socket.
