I am trying (without sucess so far) to install a small network between
my home and my shop.
First I tried to hook the two computers directly together ( I have two
ethernet ports on my computer) without any success. I always got the
error message that a network cable is unplugged. everything seemed to
be connected ok.

Secondly I bought a Linksys BEFSR41 Router, and hooked my cable modem
into it, and then hooked up my XP machine, which works as it should.
However, when I plug the cable for the second computer, nothing
happens! I am wondering if I have it wired correctly?? Can anyone tell
me where I can get a wiring diagram for the two plugs??

Sorry if this a little off topic!

Thanks ,
Wildbill

Are you sure you connected the ethernet cards via a _crossed_ network
cable?

Hi,
Probably nothing to do with mobo. Probably just a question of configuring
the network. Suggest you ask the same question at
microsoft.public.en.windowsxp.connection.
Anyway, the reason why the point to pint (without router) solution didn't
work is most probably because you did not use a crossed cable (which you
shoud not use with your router).
By the way, when you plug your cables in the router, do the connection leds
indicate a connection. If so, it is surely a software prob (see above)
Good luck
Serge

Assuming you have used the correct cables, when you plug in nothing will
happen untill you configure / setup the network

The 2 ethernet ports are different. One is 10-100 and the other 10-100-1000.
Make sure the port you are connected to has the driver loaded. check in
device manager under Network Adapters. There should be an entry for Marvell
Yukon Gigabit Ethernet (the Gigabit adapter) and an entry for NVIDIA nForce
MCP Networking Controller (the 10-100 adapter). If not, use the driver disc
that came with the motherboard and install the driver.
