A8AE-LE

Gentlemen and Ladies:

I have dealt with a number of HP computers, and in case this has not been mentioned in the past, there usually IS a way to nuke the HD and reinstall the operating system from scratch.

For instance, if one wishes to install a new version of XP-Pro using a bootable CD or DVD with that distribution on it, one has to make some changes to the BIOS settings.

If this isn't done, as the installation procedure gets to where it says, "Installing Windows", the blue-screen of death appears shortly after with a warning that there is some sort of hardware error.

This is not true. All that is wrong is that setup cannot find the SATA controller and its attached drive(s).

This usually appears when the original hard drive is a SATA drive. If the hard drive you wish to use is an IDE drive, this usually does not appear, but who wants to use an IDE drive these days?

So, what you have to do is, in the case of the A8AE-LE, use the F-11 key on bootup, then, first, hit F-5 to set all BIOS settings to default, then go to the screen (usually the second one) that shows whether or not your SATA controller is enabled, make sure that is enabled, then set the IDE controller to SECONDARY only, save and exit.

Now, boot on the bootable DVD/CD with your operating system on it, and when it gets to that point in the setup where it looks for the hard drive, it will find it and you can proceed as usual.

Good luck.

Ray,

I'd be happy to sell you my board. Do you need a CPU or more memory? I have both.

If you decide to replace it with the Gigabyte board that I did, be forewarned that there were a few bumps in the road:
1) I had to re-do verification of XP. Maybe most know about this, but it was a bit of a hassle, had to be on the phone with Microsoft for probably most of 1/2 hour.
2) Installing the drivers was not straightforward as it sounds in the documentation. At one point the system hung and just sat there going in circles. I left it for around 1/2 hour and afterward it was still churning exactly the same way. I had to hit the power button to get its' attention. This may have contributed to #3.
3) Now that I am done, I have a "no disk in drive" error that won't go away. I'm sure it's solvable but it's kind of a pain. For the rest of my experience, see below:

------------------------------------------------

OK, it's a week later than planned, but now I have 100% verification. The front panel connector plugs right in and the power switch and lights work perfectly. I have it up and running now, and it's a huge improvement.

One little hiccup that I hadn't looked at carefully enough, the new board is a tiny bit less deep than the old, so two of the holes, the ones close to the edge of the board at the front of the computer didn't line up at all. However I was able to kludge it together.

Also, there was a front panel "aux input" (3 wires) that didn't have a home. I haven't ever used it in the past, so I won't miss it. Overall I'm happy with how it turned out.

Did you ever find out where to put the speaker cable? I have the same board and cant figure this out. Thanks!

wow this thread still going after all theses years glad as well as i just been given a hp a1000 pc with a amd athlon 64 3200 CPU in it well not in it as dunno what happened and the heatsink and CPU was out of it socket and at least 12 pins bent and no way of sorting them out

i checked the rest of the PC ram /hdd /DVD ROM etc and works i cannot check the motherboard as the CPU dont work but i got a CPU 3800x2 in another PC and wondering would i use that to try the motherboard or

###This motherboard can be upgraded with the following processors
Athlon64 X2 4800
Athlon 64 4000
Sempron 3200
###
is this just the those cpus that can fit this board or is it that it goes up to athlon64 x2 4800
if i can use the 3800 one to check and if all works i can buy a 4800 and let the kids use it

any help will be appreciated

ty

oldpot, be sure to read my post a few back about my ordering a cheap 4800 and thinking I could drop it in. The board has a 939 socket, and the newer 4800s are AM2. If you think you'll be doing a cheap upgrade with the 939 socket 4800, good luck. When I checked in Sept/Oct, the only ones I found were in the $400 range. 🙁
However, as long as the 3800 is a 939 socket device, it should work.

Trying to install a Diamond/ATI PCIexpress card -2600XT512PE2...
it bumps the Realtek AC'97 Audio for a ATI HD....something.....anyway it dont work thought maybe installing with out the audio but then there is nothing....no audio device. So what do the audio jumpers do on the.... A8AE-LE

Hey guys I'm also glad this thread is still alive!
I also have the SR1616NX with the asus mb.. I'm just wondering if its possible to overclock it? I heard something about bios being locked, but just wanting to know :)

I have the HP OEM version of this motherboard (AmberineM-GL6E) and it looks like the HDD has failed on me. It came with a 200Gb ATA-100 IDE drive but common sense dictates that I consider going with a cheaper SATA drive. The problem is that the http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?dlc=en&lc=en&product=1127219%E2%8C%A9=en&cc=us&docname=c00496280#N849 page indicates the following:

Serial ATA

* 2 SATA connectors
* Each connector supports 1 serial ATA-150 disk drive

So given that it states it supports serial ATA-150 SATA drives, does this mean that an SATA 3.0 drive won't work? I see no indication that the latest BIOS update includes added support form SATA II so I'd like to know if I'm truly restricted to SATA1.5 or not. Again, the reasons are that SATA3.0 drives are slightly cheaper than the SATA1.5 drives which, in turn, are cheaper than the IDE ATA-100 drives. No sense in paying more for older technology unless I have to.

Thanks!
Jeff

Hey guys, i have the Compaq Presario Media Center SR1850NX with the same asus motherboard. Dont quote me on this but im pretty sure that the SATA 3.0 will work. I have a 250gb SATA hd and just bought the latest and greatest SATA cd/dvd drive to replace the one it came with and it works fine.
If it helps anyone: Ive ran xp mc 32, vista ult. 32, win 7 64, they all worked fine minus the sound needing a driver.
Ive installed ATI x1650xt into the pci express and replaced the ata cd burner to a sata. With the stock 1gb no problems still fast. And running 5.1 through the integrated sound. Just reformat DO NOT upgrade!
Im looking for another version or upgrade to the bios if anyone has a link. To overclock it. You can use rivatuner for the graphics works ok.

Had I been buying the hard drive for myself I would have tried the SATA drive but I found a cheap 250Gb IDE-ATA drive and so went the safer route.

As for drivers, I went to the HP support website and grabbed all the latest drivers from there. Not sure about overclocking but then again I wasn't going to try that with a system that had no need for more performance.

Aloha Theotherbubka,
New to the comunity, my handle is ................LongBike ,
I have a computer and it is a ........HP a1310n ( the case says ...............a1330n ) , and I was wondering why this system always has black screen problems. I have two here and they come on and stay on but with a new HD they won't boot the software ?? I been reading the forum articles and became interested enough to join it. I have it in a custom ........... Antec case some one gave me so I started out to repair it and give it a new home. But it has gotten to be a horor to get it to appear on the screen. Have you any advice on this ..........complication Factor.

Jeff,

Most hard drive manufacturers that make the SATA 3.0 version offer a software patch that converts the 3.0 to 1.5.

I have used Western Digital SATA 3.0 drives on boards that required 1.5's and it still recognized the drive, so I can only assume that they are backward compatible.

Hey Guy I had that problem with those little wire's all over before, what I did was just hook up the ..........

to hookup. The computer worked for a long time then I did the rest.
They were the ....LED lights and Idid not really need them at all at that time, and it worked fine. I had a
ATX case given to me and some of those wire's were not ther to use. I GUESS THEY SHOULD BE HOOKED UP BUT DID NOT KNOW THEN WHAT TO DO.

I HAVE THIS SAME MOBO I PUT IT IN A NEW CASE TRYING TO CONNECT FRONT CONNECTORS I ALLREADY GOT HDD AND POWER LEDS AS WELL AS THE SWITCH COMPUTER POWERS ON HAVING PROBLEMS WITH INTERNAL SPEAKER AND MY FRONT USB MY TOWER HAS EACH WIRE FOR THE USB SEPERATE 9WIRES TOTAL THEY SAY [VCC-1] [VCC-2] [SHIELD] [GROUND-1] [GROUND-2] [DATA+1] [DATA+2] [DATA-1] [DATA-2]
ANY HELP APRECIATED

I got an HP a1230n a few months ago. It should have been a good machine. It would run for a short period of time, then lock up. I looked at all the information I could find on the processor (standard AMD) and the board (A8AE). No good answer from HP. They and some other user groups tried, but no success.

I did some investigating. The length of time the computer would stay on increased when the case was open. So it looked like a heat problem.

I checked the processor, cleaned it and refitted it with it with Arctic Silver. Still no success.

I tried putting a fan aimed on the motherboard. Success!

The final answer has been: 1.) Remove the old RAM, 2.) Install 2 sticks of 1 Gb PNY PC 3200 RAM and 3.) add a ThermaltakeCL-R0023 over the new RAM. I closed the case and let it stew for several hours. Solid as a rock.

The Athlon 64 x2 4800+ and another 2 Gb of matched RAM appear to be the next additions for the machine. I plan to be doing some serious CAD work with it running Pro/E.

The responses by the rest of you have been a lot of help.

Thanks,

Neal Lewis

hello, i bought an Artisan HTPC case, which came with a pentium board, however to cool the P4 was not easy & too loud for HT use, so i swapped the board for the A8AE-LE (with opteron 146) which is virtually silent. The problem i got is i bought a HD 5450 GPU (which is half-width & i wanted to use HDMI with audio) to fit the 2U case.
The A8AE-LE refuses to boot with this card! i can use the internal GPU or plug in a 7600 card and it's fine. I thought the HD 5450 was broke, but it works in any other MB i've got(?)

Any ideas? 🙁

Well, I don't know if this will help but I have a ATi HD 4770 on my HP a1210n, the issue I had is that I would always display on the VGA port of the mobo and not the through the ATi card. I had to go through the bios and disable the VGA port, I think it had the option to change it to PCI but I'm not sure...

The issue I have is that my HD 4770 does not run like it should according to all the reviews on the HD 4770. I think the issue is heat but I don't know where I can add fans to this case. I'm ready to hack holes into the case and mount them bootleg style:)

Oh, to help out... I found pics and info on the motherboard at HP when I was reseraching RAM upgrades. I see that it says it tops out at 4gb, I have 2gb now and moving to 4gb before the year's end. I would like that Opteron upgrade but I don't like this lack of cooling ability. I don't want to buy another case though:)

Anyways.....

If anyone can give me any tips to poor performance of my HD 4770, I would appreciate it.

I have the AMD Athlon 64 3500+.

Oh yeah, the stock HD in my comp is a 3.0 SATA, I saw a question where they asked about it....

Alolha Guy's ,
I have another SR1611NX and a SR2818NX and ned to know if the processors
are the problem for more speed. These are both A8AE-LE and one is a A8N-LA.
Also have a media one ABM2N-LA . Good to have the posting in yet because it is very helpful with the older information given. I am posting this in June 2011
so if anyone is still here let me know. ( I have found alot of info to these P C 's .

I have a Compaq Presario sr1710nx with the Asus A8AE-LE motherboard. Want to upgrade to the AMD Opreron 180 OSA180DAA6CD CPU chip. My question to you is did you have to change to another CPU fan, or can you use the same one that came with the system. I'm running a AMD 64 3800+ right now. Second question did you have to upgrade the BIOS to make it work. Compaq says that the Asus A8AE-LE motherboard will only support up to the AMD 64 X2 4800+ ADA4800DAA6CD CPU chip. I found one for $75.00 and will buy it if this will work on my system.
