I have an old Asus A8N SLI that's been going fine and yesterday suddenly refused to boot giving me one long beep and two short beeps when I try.

That's a GPU error I think, is it?

I pulled the card and cleaned it, put it back, no better.

Any suggestions ?

Oh, okay. Thanks. I must have consulted the wrong list of beep codes. I'll try that. :)
for award bios 1 long and 2 short would be gpu error, but you have phoenix award bios (which is award under phoenix)
hmm just checked google and for phoenix award got this:
1 Long Beep, 2 Short Beeps

One long beep followed by two short beeps indicates that there has been a checksum error. This means that there is some kind of motherboard issue. Replacing the motherboard should fix this problem.

so lets hope its just ram issue

I just pulled the RAM and tried.

First I put only a single stick in and booted fine.
Then another stick and booted fine.
Then a third stick and got this message:'
'Free Magic is broken at 0x8255a360: 0x2c3c2808

That was followed on the way to powering off by a 'disk boot failure' message.
and I had to power down.

Removed that third stick again and rebooted.

Got one of those muticoloured pixellated screens. Though they're not really pixel blocks, bigger than that, maybe a 1/4" long each one. Reminds me of years ago we used to get that sort of thing on those old graphics cards.

Went and tried again and this time was able to add all four sticks in one at a time and it booted into Linux Mint each time.

Thought I was fine. Then it locked up. Won't respond to keyboard or mouse. Nothing.

Hmmmm
