Abit KT7-RAID - what type of RAM?

Hey all...long-time lurker here.

I am in process of setting up a new box and am planning on purchasing the ABIT KT7-RAID Mainboard...with either a 900mhz T-Bird, or the 1Ghz. For those of you out there running this board...please give me your thoughts or setups in regards to RAM!

Corsair? Crucial? Other?

CAS2 or CAS3?

What is "good" RAM from "value" RAM? I was a bit lost when looking at RAM descriptions and pricing...as two pieces of the SAME brand would look very similar...but the pricing showed there was obviously a difference. I am planning on one 256mb PC133, but have not figured out CAS2 from CAS3 - and don't know what brands are good, or WORK well with the above mainboard (have heard Corsair is a hard setup on this Abit mainboard).

Suggestions?

Thanks.

My friend just bought the cheap PC133 256 meg DIMM from accessmicro. It was generic with a lifetime warranty. Works great though. If you have the extra cash, go with the CAS2 brand name stuff though. I hear it actually makes a difference.

Obviously cas2 is better (5-10%) and from what I rcall AMD is little fussy (at least old K7's). I think Crucial is the best bet. I have Mushkin but think Crucial is better for the money.

yes it should (i am partial to 128 mb sticks)

yes cas2 and CL2 are the same

note: Windows 98 doesn't handle large amounts of memory too well. You may run out of resources quicker. If running 2000 or Me I believe you are OK. Anyone with a diff. opinion or a good solution please let us know. I tried playing with the virtual memory some, still needed some work.

If you are interested in OCing at all go with the latest Mushkin 222 PC133. Crucial has made the finest memory for years, but Mushkin has their number in this market. I bumped my bus up to 110Mhz, which moved my memory to 146Mhz without a glitch. I have read a few benchmarks compairing Crucial, Mushkin and other PC133 manufacturers. Mushkin was the only one that was able to post @145Mhz. These review comparisons are now a few months old, and may not be indicative of current performance.

KT7-RAID User's Manual p.3-7: "...an SDRAM working speed of over 133MHz will stay at 133MHz". Any comments?

Check out MadOnion.Com's review of OCZ RAM.

They tested OCZ Enhanced PC-133 memory guaranteed to run at 150 Mhz, CAS 2 and actually obtained 156 Mhz, CAS 2. price $124.99/128 MB

OCZ's standard memory, named OCZ select PC-133 guaranteed to run at 133 Mhz, CAS 2 and 150 Mhz CAS 3 reached 148 Mhz, CAS 2. price $71.99/128 MB

The OCZ.SAFESHOPPER.COM site makes the claim that the RAM chips are hand picked. (I don't know how they do that).

I CAN claim that I am happy with the 128 MB of OCZ Select RAM that I am running at 133 Mhz, CAS 2. I am also happy with the Abit KT7 Motherboard, Duron CPU, and OCZ Monster II cooler combo that was guaranteed to run at 1000 Mhz and does. A very good deal for $217.99 (now $219.99).
