Able to run GTAV at 4k at 60fps... but there's screen tearing

(Note, that the Video Cards are not on pc part picker... my video cards are directly from Nvidia with no third party.)

I am running into an issue where GTAV runs at 60fps at 4k on high settings, but as soon as the framerate drops down to 55 frames, usually while driving or during explosions the game screen tears massively.

I tried turning on Smooth Vsync for SLI which helps a lot, but as soon as the game goes under 60fps, it locks it to 30 fps regardless if it was at 55 fps or not.

I can't figure out a solution to remove the massive screen tearing other than disabling SLI, which makes it run at 30-40 frames per second and defeats the purpose for me. Adaptive Sync doesn't appear to work at all in SLI.

Also when I use my monitor on my computer, smooth vsync allows it to go to 45 frames per second which is a lot better, but my TV is only 30/60 on smooth so I am not understanding how that works or why it's different.

My Settings in the game is 2 notches below optimal settings in nvidia geforce experience if you hit customize, so it's pretty much high-ultra. When I bring it down 4 notches below optimum, the game never goes below 60fps... but being I'm only struggling with the game at 55fps on much higher settings I would like to know if there is any fix for this.

Anyone have any suggestions?
 


ADaptive vsync makes no difference. THis is a brand new motherboard PC and Operating system.

Adaptive Vsync works perfectly outside of SLI, with no screen tearing. Turning it on makes it significantly worse.


I guess it could be a problem between the chair, I do work in IT and more often than not most of my problems are done because I overlooked something because IT people get a little over confident of their abilities, but I seriously double checked everything, I don't know what I can do.
 
Describe how it is enabled. Usually the best way to make it work is to turn "adaptive" on in the Global options under 3D settings. Make sure that the game specific profile doesn't override this option. Then use V-sync in game. At least, that is how it works for me. You might also want to try other games. Perhaps GTA V is the culprit.

Oh, one more possibility. Do you have a FPS limiter on, that is set to 60 FPS? Adaptive V-sync doesn't turn the V-sync on unless you are able to go past 60 FPS. If you are right on 60 FPS, it will stay off. And FPS meters don't mix with v-sync well on Nvidia cards in general.
 


I think you're over estimating the power of adaptive vsync, it does help but it still suffers from stutter. If it was that good, there really would be no purpose to gsync/freesync.

I can see it still stutter even with adaptive VSYNC on. Some people are perfectly ok with this, but I cannot stand it... its immersion breaking for me.

The benefit of smooth sync it is completely fixed, 30fps and 30hertz locked looks way better than 45 frames on 60hz variable to me. I must benchmark my games to run at 60fps on smooth sync at all times, which means I am sacrificing a lot of frames.

To reach that level in GTAV, I have to get about 90FPS at 4k resolution idle to get 60fps constant with smooth on. If I want to fix my problem, I have to get a GSYNC monitor, but I like playing 4k on my TV... so no such thing exists.

Is it possible to to change the refresh rate of my TV from 60hz to 45hz? 45 frames/Hertz is smooth enough for me, but when I do a custom resolution change it tells me signal not supported =(
 


I'm not sure you know what adaptive vsync is then. Gsync is superior, no doubt, because when you are not at the max refresh rate, it still doesn't tear. Adaptive V-sync tears at FPS below your refresh rate, but it doesn't stutter. Though you may be confusing tearing with stuttering.

To be clear about what Adaptive V-sync does:
When your FPS reach your refresh rate. V-sync is on. You will not get tearing, and your FPS are capped at your refresh rate (60hz in your case).
When your FPS is not able to reach your refresh rate, v-sync is dynamically turned off. This will be just like having no v-sync at all. There is no stuttering, but you get tearing.
