Question About my Laptop CPU upgrade

I have successfully integrated the new i7 in the Laptop. Everything is working fine. All 4 cores show up in taskmanager and so on.
Perfect.

Performance is of course better.


Now comes the question.
The i7 I bought is 2nd Gen. Just like my i5.

Could I theoretically integrate a 3rd Gen CPU with the same socket in the Laptop?
Would it work? Why wouldn't it work?

It would only work if the BIOS for the laptop has updated microcode for Ivy Bridge CPU. Otherwise it would not know how to work it. Also the chipset would need to be capable of supporting Ivy Bridge. A preliminary search suggests not all mobile Sandy Bridge chipsets are capable of Ivy Bridge support.

If you were so inclined. I suppose you could look up modifying the microcode yourself. If no updated BIOS is available. At the risk of ruining your BIOS if you got something wrong. Some enthusiasts do so to add non-supported CPU or NVMe support to old motherboards.
