About using MOLEX adaptors

My PSU only has one 6+2 pin cable and my GPU needs one 6 pin and one 8 pin input.
So I am going to use a MOLEX adaptor for a few days before I get a new PSU. My GPU had 2 adaptors with it: one 6 pin and one 8 pin.

My question is should I use:

  • The 6 pin MOLEX adaptor and the PSU's 8 pins on the card or

  • The 8 pin MOLEX adaptor and the PSU's 6 pins?

Specs: Motherboard: Z97P-D3, CPU: i5 4690k, GPU: Gigabyte GTX 970 4GB OC, 8GB RAM DDR3, SSD 850 evo 256GB.

It's an issue with the fan design likely and trying to make them run across such a large range. I get the same problem on my EVGA ACX3.0 fans.

As soon as it comes out of idle (fans off) there's a big, scraping noise. I also get an annoying whiny/scrapy sound at I think 500RPM or so (fairly low).

I doubt there's a fix (except to maybe keep the fan always at a minimum, and avoid fan RPM's in the problem area). I plan to RMA my GTX1080 at some point.

What is the make/model of your psu?

Wait a few days.
If your psu does not have the requisite leads, it may not have the power to run your card with adapters.
The danger is that if your psu is a cheap unit that gets overloaded, it may fail and cause damage to your other parts,.

The PSU is not that bad, it's CoolerMaster Elite 600W. It just doesn't have the required cables/pins.
Call me stupid but I hadn't noticed that for some months there was only the 6 pin connected to my GPU. So now I am wondering what is better as a temporary solution until I get a new PSU.

it's fine.
You can provide enough power through the 24V rails that it's a non-issue.

*However, the web page says you have 2x (6+2) cables so shouldn't need an adapter. Did you lose a 6+2 cable?

(If so, the adapter will work as well)

Isn't this a non-modular PSU?

The cables should be soldered in place so BOTH of the 6+2 cables should be there. Use one for the 8-pin, and the other for the 6-pin only.

update: oh yeah, I was looking at a different model the "Extreme" 600W instead.

Why?

The power supply he has now will work just fine.

OLDER designs left more Wattage for the CPU so were more conservative on what PCIe, GPU cables could provide power. With an i5-4690K setup there's plenty of power left over on the 12V rails (which feed the CPU or GPU) so the MOLEX-> 6-pin source is perfectly capable of delivering stable power.

I connected 6 pin MOLEX and 8 pin from PSU but now the GPU makes a weird noise -like a light scratching- when I open a game. The noise isn't the usual one that comes from fans.
Btw, performance (FPS) has increased.

It's not a problem caused by your power supply, though lack of power before may have affected the fans if you were running without all cables.
