AC97 header or HD Audio header?

This header is on an MSI 7597 v2 or thereabouts. I just wanted to connect my simple front panel headphone jack and mic jack and the front panel cable has two connectors. One labled AC97 and the other is labled HD Audio. What kind of header is this on the motherboard? AC97 or HD Audio? It's labled JAUD1 on the motherboard. The description below is from the MB manual. Not much info.

On page 17 of your manual it shows the JSP1 connection for HD audio. This pic shows the front case connections available for your headphones and microphone and is what you want to use.

I connected the HD Audio connector to the MB header and it works fine except that is a slight intermitant tone on the headphones. But I live in an old house which doesn't even have grounds in the receptacles so I think it's because the PC is not grounded.
