Hey guys,
This thread seems to be very good at helping people with acer laptop recovery so here's my story:
Had a lovely Acer 5610 for a couple of years with Vista, it ran like a charm. Came with a hidden boot sector on the hard drive and no recovery CD, which was fine as well. Over the holidays, I realized that the hard drive was starting to fragment very badly (it's over four years old, so understandable). I can still access a lot of files when I plug the hard drive into another computer. Now, if I were to buy a new hard drive, how can I reinstall the Vista from the hidden sector on my old hard drive on the new one? As I said, there was no recovery CD and the laptop is no longer covered by warranty. When I try to purchase an Recovery CD from Acer, it tells me that 'Recovery media is no longer available for the serial number you entered'. I'm still not sure what they mean, but I'll play along I guess. This may sound stupid, but can I somehow put the hidden sector on a CD and basically 'create' a boot CD for Vista specifically for my laptop?
I also tried getting a vista mirror and entering the product key I initially had, but it won't accept the key for some reason. So I'm kind of limited to the hidden sector on the old drive (which doesn't need a key, from what I understand). Any other options?
Thanks a lot for your time,
Irene

I've tried recovering the old drive with the alt+f10. I can get the recovery started, then it works for a few minutes, and finally goes to the black screen and begins to go through files. This is where it stops (indefinitely, up to 10 hours) and becomes unresponsive to anything. It most often stops on the following file:
Oxc01 90036 1207/95817 (winhttp.dll)
Other times it gets past it and stops at 1680/95817. This is why I assumed the hard drive was too far gone.

Use f8 on startup, to access the safe mode menu. When the menu appears, arrow down to safe mode with command prompt. Press enter to select your operating system. When you see the command prompt, get to the root C:\ directory, and type chkdsk /r <--this command will scan and try to repair error on the hard drive.

Ran the disk check, warning for imminent failure of disk 🙁 I also got a reply from Acer support about the 'unavailable' ERecovery CD:
>Acer updates the Restoration CD frequently. We no longer have the CD needed for your system. I can only recommend you to purchase a retail version of the Operating System and search for the drivers of your computer in the internet. I could relate to how inconvenient issues like this can be and I hope that you find this response informative.
>Regarding your query please be informed that it is not possible for me to make a recovery CD via the third-party computer.

I take it I'm out of luck on this one. They really should go back to supplying an ERecovery CD when you purchase the computer, rather than making a hidden partition on the hard drive.

Thanks a lot for your help aford10, I appreciate the quick responses.

It sounds like you need a new hard drive for sure. You can get restore discs from 3rd party sites, though, I'm not sure how reliable most are. If you can find someone with the same version of windows, you can use their install disc, and use your activation code. If not, you'll have to buy a copy of windows.

If you end up buying a copy of windows, look at Acer's driver support first. You'll want to make sure they have drivers available for whatever OS you end up using.

use a standard windows cd(whatever version you are using) and then boot from it. Once you boot off the cd, you can choose repair instead of install. Hopefully this works, if not, just do a fresh install, but slipstream the cd with all the drivers first so its not too much of a pain.

ok needed to boot from restore partion on Acer Aspire 5515. did the Alt - F10 thing at Acer flash screen. this did it. thanks for the help

according to my personal experience, recovery CD is after certain time not well readable. I always make a full disk backup using TrueImage and save teh backup copy on a external. I can then recover the system easily using a usb stick. Highly recommending!

Are you getting error messages? Or is it just not responding?

Do you have a windows disc? Does it have a recovery partition?

I got the same message after entering the command
mbrwrwin boot hdo:x
but go ahead and type exit and hit enter anyway it will work

Repair your computer
Select keyboard layout, click Next then enter your user details
Click Command prompt
here you should be presented with 'X:\Windows\System32
type 'cd\' <Enter> without quotes
then at X:\ type 'mbrwrwin boot hdo:x' <Enter> without quotes
this sets the MBR to boot off the X: partition (ie. 'hidden partition')
now type 'Exit'

but my system won't work. When I came to Dos prompt and types the command..it gave me error saying this command is not a recognized command.

PLease help me what to do?

Kind regards

Were you able to get this resolved. I am having the same issue now. Thanks a lot.

Here's the easiest fix I have used for restoring the PQSERVICE ALT-F10 feature on an Acer Aspire 9504WSMi
laptop that had Win 7 Installed over XP. This works assuming you left the PQSERVICE partition (partition 1) in tact and is not damaged, have a working Windows XP CD to reinstall the OS (only to recover the PQSERVICE boot function), SuperFdisk, and have PartEdit32. Use PTDD Super Fdisk 1.0 (found on the internet) and delete the Win 7 OS partition (partition 2). When you exit the program it will write the changes to the Master Boot Record. At this point you can check your PQSERVICE partition to see if it is working by setting that partition to active in Super Fdisk. If after rebooting, your computer boots into the Acer recovery mode you should be ok to move forward. Run Super Fdisk again and recreate the OS partition and format the partition and label it ACER, and make the partition active. Reboot again, and you should now be able to reinstall Windows from a CD. Now you can follow the steps found in method 1 here: http://ezinearticles.com/?How-To-Repair-The-Acer-D2D-Recovery&id=794500

Be sure to set the PQSERVICE type back to 1B to hide it before your final reboot when following the instructions from the above link.

NOTE: On my Acer Aspire 9504 the file mbrwrdos.exe did not exist, only mbrwrwin.exe which is basically the same program and works flawlessly with the instructions found on the link above.

Also read the following link on information about Macrium Reflect which may help detect, backup, and restore the PQSERVICE partition. I have not tried this yet but sounds promising.

Hope this helps,

Here is the procedure for performing E_Recovery from Recovery disks

1 Turn on your computer and insert the first system recovery disc into the
optical disc drive. Restart your computer.
2 During startup when the Acer logo shows, press the F2 key to enter BIOS
Setup, where you can set system parameters.
3 Use the left and right arrow keys to select the Boot submenu.
4 Use the up and down arrow keys to select the IDE1* device.
5 Use the F6 key to move the IDE1* device to the highest boot priority, or use
the F5 key to move other devices to a lower boot priority. Ensure that the
IDE1* device is the highest priority.
6 Press the ESC key to enter the Exit submenu, press the ENTER key to Exit
Saving Changes. Press the ENTER key again to select Yes. The system will
reboot.
7 When you reboot, Windows will be installed from the recovery disc.
8 Insert the second recovery disc when prompted, then follow the onscreen
prompts to complete the restore.
9 Remove the recovery disc from the optical drive once the restore is
complete. Do this before rebooting your computer.

neo
