So my friend bought acer xb240h and is using 2.0 HDMI and says that he has tried a lot of things to change to 144hz, but it doesn't work.

Can you recommend anything that fixes it, I'm quite sure HDMI 2.0 supports 144hz on that monitor. He has a AMD GPU

HDMI 1.4 supports 1080p@120Hz & 4K@30Hz, HDMI 2.0 increases it to 4K@60Hz but made no changes to the 1080p support. So, it sounds like the only way he'll be able to get 144Hz on that monitor is to use DVI (should have been included with the monitor) or DisplayPort.

Best way for him to test it is to try & see if he can set it for 120Hz. If it works on the HDMI, then everything is working fine, & he'll just have to switch to DVI or DisplayPort for faster speeds.

HDMI 2.0 isn't seen much outside of televisions, most monitors still only offer HDMI 1.4 support and will not support 120Hz over HDMI even though the spec theoretically allows for it. For virtually all 144Hz monitors on the market, you have to connect with DisplayPort of Dual Link DVI to get high refresh rates.
