Action man, out of action

A lot of the time, when we moderate, it won't be seen. A post, or even an entire thread(s) will disappear. Sometimes a comment will be made in a thread, if it has to be locked, but the majority of times, it just happens, and the perpetrator is spoken to/dealt with/executed via PM.

We do post in other forums, mainly down here in Community, which is where most hung out before getting roped into moderating. We're still regular members of the place too, not just mods, and we do like to take the piss and insult people. Actually, that might be just me.... 8O

Really? Well, that is surprising. I thought that mods were supposed to be like, ummm, "gods" in a certain way, of course, within the forum.
Like you said, supposed to be there, but not to be seen. And supposed to give an example for all the others members of the community.
If you like to get in the "mess" , well, that's fine. I can't tell you what to do. It's your life! 😀
...
I have a little question! I hope you can answer: Who decides whose are the mods? I mean, do you change the mods from time to time?
I don't know, maybe one of you had to quit, eventually, and you had to get someone to replace him/her. Again, I don't know, its just speculation. 8)

Basically, we all hang out in the Other, which is pretty much a no holds barred environment. All of have been members for a few years, and have a laugh and a joke (at dvdpiddy's expense usually) in there. That's where we arse about. Up above, in Hardware etc, you'll either see us take moderator actions, or contribute (occassionaly) to threads. But when we want to let off steam, or catch up with stuff, it's in the Other.

The mods were decided, initially, by Fredi when this place was in Beta testing. A couple were appointed, then the group grew when it was realised that some EU based mods were needed, to account for the time difference. Fredi decided the original duo, then recommendations were made about the rest of us and here we are. I'm sure if someone jacked it in, or we needed another, then Fredi would consult the existing mods to see who we felt was the best person for the job. Fredi trusts our judgement.

You have to be able to take a load of shit being a mod, which is why we've all been around a fair bit, have seen it all and done it all. Broad shoulders are essential!

For what it's worth I think the mods do a pretty good job.

The quicker you realize there are certain inevitabilities, the easier you’re life will be.

First, there will always be fanboys in life. People that will passionately argue for something, on this site it’s CPUs, and attack the other side, facts be damn. They’re like flies at a picnic, you have to learn to live with them.

Second, there will always be people who try to pick fights, be insulting, ignorant, and in general rude. More flies.

Third, there is a Complaint Button, use it.

Finally and most importantly, learn to just Say No. Once you find a thread irritating, no longer informative, interesting, or amusing, stop reading the damn the thing.

Hallelujah brother "g" ... now say that part about the mods again ... 😀

I cannot say often enough how great the mods on this site are. (You have my e mail address and can send the coupons for free been to me at this address) 😛

Thanks to a vote of the good people of this forum. Actionmans sock puppets, slinky's and keyboard antics have been put to an end. Its about time the member got together to rid the forum of the immature, resource wasting morons. Thanks again everyone.

Action_Man is a good mate of mine. Whatever perceived intrusion you feel have been caused by him towards your sensibilities, I can assure you, they're ill-conceived.

I know him personally, I've spoken to him on the blower; he's a good young bloke.

I'm only sorry I got to this thread so late.

I don't know about other people but I come here to find out about hardware so I can make good buying decisions. Listening to bickering, stupid kids is an incredible turn off. I wish the moderators would do something a bit more effective than fiddling around with capital letters. That's not the problem. The problem is good faith - or rather lack of it. It's not difficult to discern. People looking for a bunfight should get a warning then they should get banned. If no-one ever smacks their bottoms (1) they'll never learn how to behave (2) other users will get fed up wading through the noise posts and go elsewhere.

Argh, thats crap mate.

I can only talk for the 'other' 'other' posting that goes on and your sentiments in this regard simply dont apply there.

Sure, some twirps up in the graphics and cpu forums need their heads pulled in but the mods dont need to do it; we focking need to. Just lay the smack down on them and piss em off. Nobody's here to hold anybody's hands.

You seem half-intelligent so I'm absolutely positive you could manipulate some teen's piss-ant comments and get them to self-analyse their actions - thus improving your user experience.

This coming from the MadModMike Puppet 'MrsD'????????????????????

I dunno.....

[sarcasm] I think these mods are just a bunch of....um...THUGS!!! Yes, that's it! THUGS! Yes, yes. They sit around the other talking about Wingding's amazing body parts (for which I will NOT name the parts referred to...), and....um....talking about beer....yes...beer.

And you expect these guys to actually work? You expect them to mod this place? Sheesh! [/sarcasm]

I took a sabbatical for the last year or so (I had to slow down a bit due to my medical conditions...Cancer SUCKS!!!), and upon returning here, I see the same pattern of people here, with the same types of issues. Years ago, it may have been Spitfire trying to be the AMD talker or SlvrPheonix on the Intel side, whereas now it is 9-inch. It is still the same. Just with different people.

It takes a bit of time to understand that these message boards here at Tom's are pretty much the best place on the internet to ask about computing. I would even be willing to say that there is more knowledge here at Tom's than anywhere else, to be offered to someone asking a question.

The bad side of this is that with all this, there is a price. You are going to have all sorts of people posting here, and as we all know, you can't please everyone all the time. These mods are doing their best, given they are volunteers and do this in their spare time.

Consider this. I estimate that roughly between 1,000 to 5,000 posts are posted on Tom's in a given day. With 5 mods, thats roughly between 200 to 1,000 posts that they EACH have to monitor. Where would they have ANY free time, if they had to constantly monitor these? It cannot be expected of them to do this. Therefore, just as they are doing now, they are keeping the peace and a balance. It's been working for years now. Why shouldn't it work in the future?

Personally, I think the mods here are doing a great job. For me, it's almost like i never left. Almost....

Thanx Mods! 😀 😀 😀

I must say the title of this thread came as a bit of a shock. I'm glad it was just BS.

I still consider myself a noob on these forums and I have to admit that when I was first introduced to AM's errr....personality I took it the wrong way.

I thought he was an arse. Guess what? He is, but we wouldn't want him any other way. I evened PMd a senior member of the forum inquiring about his...state of mind more or less. The senior member in question asked me to point out any of AM's posts that were offensive. I in turn spent some time sifting through his past posts. What I learned is that AM calls people out on their BS and doesn't put up with their crap. If AM comes into a thread and starts calling posters out on their stuff, then chances are their BS needed to be set straight. AM's posts are a good way to determine whether or not somone's post is legit or BS. When the post is legit, he often contributes to it with solid info, unlike some posters around here (me included.)

So as you can see he can be quite helpful at filtering crap from useful information.

OMG, Action_Man's a crap filter!!!!!

Sorry dude, don't take that the wrong way.

And yes, he'll always be Steve Austin. The happy kitty brought back a few suppressed thoughts.[/shudders]

He really taunted the mods in those threads as his apparent lack of knowledge of CPUs stretches over into networking--- I guess he does not understand that 130 computers in a building can all share the same IP through the server to the outside world....

Which makes me think hes some highschool noob.

Holy crap how many dead 9-inch threads are in this section. Its like a graveyard of some sort.

This is where some of the ones I thought were deleted ended up --- I had to readjust my thread locked count :) ....

I think poor 9-inch went off the deep end, he puppeted an account called amd_noob and posted the 'Let's help 9-inch' thread which quickly locked up, then the 'Let's help 9-inch (part 2)' thread which promptly locked up, and a part 3 appeared but was then deleted.

A little comical, certainly annoying, and quite pathetically sad if you ask me :) ....

And now the locked threads in here have been deleted. Hmmmm

Locked threads cannot be "added to" (no new posts) - the moderators have a quarantine area (we call it area 51) that is available only to us. We move dead, spam, locked, or inappropriate, etc. threads there - it's, principally, so other people don't lose their precious post counts (deletes, delete from post counts). 9-inch's threads were not deleted, but those locked threads are not "visable" now.

Yeah, sometimes we "clean up" a cluttered forum.

So turpit, if you want to complain or debate this - PM me. Hmmmm

Not complaining, just noting. Although, it will make it hard for Jack to carry on an accurate count.

Thank you for the information as well. Area 51. Well that just waves a red flag. You guys are keeping the good stuff for yourselves. I cant help but wonder how much good old fashioned belly laughers are tucked away in there.
