Adding a SSD s a boot drive to a current system

Hey guys I hope you could give me some advice. I recently bought (December 2012) a SSD for my laptop. It is a 246GB Vertex 4 2.5". But it came with a 3.5" adapter for desktops. So I just ordered a gaming computer from ibuypower.com and it hasnt came in yet. But I would like to format the SSD and install it as a boot drive so it loads windows and games faster. Any ideas on how to do it, with out messing up drivers and the os itself.

Personally, I would just do a clean install of the OS onto the SSD. It's not too much trouble downloading drivers to it and customizing it. I wouldn't advise you to partition and then clone the HDD <-> SSD, as it can have a negative effect on the SSD and hinder performance.

Samsung has software available with their 840 series SSD's that allow you to transfer the OS. Now as far as the reliability of said software, I can't comment on that. But as drg889 suggests, a clean install would be wiser and getting the drivers wouldn't be much of a hassle.

Ok thanks guys so basically just install windows on to the sad then downlod drivers from the internet? Will the os find the drivers buy itself? Also I would need to buy a sata cable correct?

Yes, some drivers the OS can get for you as long as you are connected online. Some drivers that may be more specific, like your video card, etc. you can just google and find pretty easily.

If your SSD didn't come with a SATA cable then yes you'll need to buy one. That's the benefit of building your own, you always have random extra stuff laying around like screws, cables, etc.

Awesome thank you so much! I just have one more question? since windows 8 is coming preinstalled what would be the best way of removing it from the hdd allowing me to do a clean install onto the hdd?

Since it's coming with your PC, you'll have to format the HDD and install Windows to the SSD. It doesn't list what version of Windows 8 comes with it but you may want to get with iBuypower to see if you can transfer the product key like you're attempting to do.
