Adding graphics card to intel gma x4500hd

will the gma x4500 hd support directx9 games without lagging?

I would say no; that is a good integrated, but will only do well for HD playback with high def and whatnot, and maybe some flash games and such. to support full games, you will need a dedicated card to play without lag

You will need to install a decent video card if you want to play games. Generally speaking Intel graphic cores are not rely meant to play game, although the Intel HD 3000 graphics core in specific models of the Intel "Sandy Bridge" Core i3/i5/i7 CPUs can do a decent job with low graphic settings.

If you have a laptop then forget about installing a graphics card because you won't be able to. The majority of laptops (at least 98%) cannot have their video card upgraded. Those few that do are generally expensive laptops designed for gaming enthusiats.

The graphic card basically depends on what your budget is and what your current power supply is. Generally speaking, Radeon graphic cards tends to use less power than their nVidia counterparts. Also, Radeon cards gives you better bang for your buck in the low end and mainstream segment.
